AN ORDINANCE EXPANDING THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE MAYOR'S SISTER <br />CITIES COMMISSION FROM THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, by ordinance adopted by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, on October 11, 1977, the "Mayor's <br />Sister Cities Commission from the City of Portsmouth" was <br />created for the purposes of promoting cultural ties and harmony <br />with other cities around the world and encouraging programs in <br />order that citizens of Portsmouth might learn about <br />Portsmouth's sister cities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, that ordinance provided that the Commission was <br />to have no more than fifteen members; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, that ordinance also provided that each member be <br />appointed for a term of two years; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the interest expressed in the work of the <br />Commission and the nature of the Commission's projects justify <br />an expansion of the membership and a lengthening of a member's <br />term. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the membership of the Mayor's <br />Sister Cities Commission from the City of Portsmouth be, and <br />the same hereby is, expanded to include not less than seven nor <br />more than twenty-one members, one-third of the members to be <br />appointed for a one-year term, one-third for a two-year term, <br />and the remaining one-third for a three-year term. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held on May 13, 1997. <br /> <br /> Teste: <br /> <br /> <br /> City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
