AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 2 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (1988) BY ENACTING A NEW ARTICLE XXVIII <br />THERETO TO ESTABLISH A HISTORY COMMISSION. <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virgima: <br /> <br /> I. That Chapter 2 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia (1988) be <br />amended by enacting a new Article XXVIII establishing a History Commission to read as <br />follows: <br /> <br />ARTICLE XXVIII. HISTORY COMMISSION <br /> <br />Sec. 2-810. Established. <br /> <br /> There is hereby established a commission to be known as the History <br />Commission. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-811. Composition; appointment and terms of members. <br /> <br /> The commission shall consist of thirteen members who shall be appointed by the <br />city council. Of the original commission, three members shall be appointed for a term of <br />one year, four members shall be appointed for a term of two years and five members shall <br />be appointed for a term of three years. At the expiration of the respective terms of such <br />members, their successors shall be appointed for terms of three years. The members shall <br />hold office during their respective terms and until their successors are appointed and <br />qualified. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-812. Filling of vacancies. <br /> <br /> AIl vacancies on the commission shall be titled by appointment by the city <br />council for the remainder of the unexpired term. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-813. Removal of members. <br /> Any member of the commission may be removed by the city council for <br />inefficiency, neglect of duty, misfeasance or malfeasance of office. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-814. Compensation of members. <br /> The members of the commission shall serve as such without compensation. <br /> <br />Sec. 2-815. Selection and term of chairman; creation and filling of other offices. <br /> <br /> The commission shall choose annually one of its members to be chairman for a <br />term of one year and until a successor is chosen and qualified. The commission may <br />create and fill such other offices as it may determine are necessary. <br /> <br /> <br />
