R-01-77 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION ENDORSING EFFORTS OF THE HAMPTON ROADS <br />PARTNERSHIP TO ATTRACT A NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION <br />FRANCHISE TO HAMPTON ROADS. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Hampton Roads Partnership's strategic plan, adopted in 1999 <br />and reconfirmed in September 2001, has as one of its strategies pursuit of a major league <br />baseball or basketball team; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, for the past two years the Partnership has actively pursued this <br />strategy; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS. it now appears that Hampton Roads is a viable candidate for the <br />possible relocation of a National Basketball Association team, the Charlotte Hornets, if a <br />new arena can be constructed; and the Partnership has requested all Hampton Roads <br />localities to indicate their support in principle for this possible relocation, anticipating <br />that the relocation would not entail financial contributions from said localities for arena <br />financing; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that the City of Portsmouth does support and endorse said effort to <br />attract a National Basketball Association team to our region; the City further encourages <br />our citizens and businesses to do likewise; and the City Manager or his designee is <br />further authorized and directed to take such further actions as he deems proper, consistent <br />with the spirit of this resolution. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, at a meeting held on <br />November 13, 2001. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
