R-01-53 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF COMMONWEALTH RAILWAY PROJECTS IN THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH. WHEREAS, Commonwealth Railwav has filed an application with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation for safety and improvement projects; and WHEREAS, Commonwealth Railway has identified several necessary projects. including the rehabilitation and upgrading of its Cedar Lane crossing in the City of Portsmouth: and WHEREAS, the 2000 General Assembly has provided funding for the acquisition, lease, or improvement of railways through the Rail Preservation Program: and WHEREAS, Commonwealth Railway is an important element of the City of Portsmouth's transportation system; and WHEREAS, Commonwealth Railway is a vital component in the economic development efforts of the City of Portsmouth and provides relief to the highway system by transporting freight and commodities; and WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth supports the project and the retention of rail service; and WHEREAS, the Commonwealth Transportation Board has established procedures for the allocation and distribution of the funds provided by the General Assembly. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth. Virginia, that the City of Portsmouth does hereby express its support of the application filed by Commonwealth Railway and requests that the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation give priority consideration to the projects proposed by Commonwealth Railway totaling $248.535. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Virginia Departrnent of Rail and Public Transportation.
