393

February 26, 1980

~his ordinance amends the City Code by adding a new article thereto setting forth
size and weight for vehicles, requiring ~ssuance o~ permits for oversize and overweight
vehicles, as well as establishing fees and penalties for violation. This ordinance has
already been adopted by the other cities in the southside Hampton Roads area. This amend-
ment to the City Code is being made in accordance with Section 46.1-343 of the Code of
Virginia. This amendment will not affect the vast majority of traffic or motor vehicles
hauling within the City of Portsmouth; but, it does establish a size and weight restriction
consistent with State law in order that we may control and regulate oversize vehicles
and loads. A letter from the Chairman of the Portsmouth Transportation Safety Commission
endorsing the proposed amendment is attached for your information. The City Manager
recommends adoption."

On motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mr. Oast, the following ordinance was adopted on
first and final reading, and by the following vote:

"AN ORDINANCE TO ~
ARTICLE XIV TO CHA'
WEIGHT."

Ayes:
Nays:

80-83 "Considera
Harding Street to West

Virginia Chemicals
Harding Street and West
accordance with State 1;
to be closed is attac.he,

lEND THE CODE OF THE CITY OF P(
~TER 23 THEREOF, PERTAINING TO

rnes, Beamer, Early, Gray, Ho]

:ion of an ordinance closing a
lorfolk Road.

has made application to close
Norfolk Road.
