<br /> presented petitions as follows and requested that a task force be appointed to study
<br /> the closing of Jamestown Fire Station~ (See Exhibit 81-1487

<br /> "We, the undersigned, as residents of Portsmouth, hereby steadfastly oppose the
<br /> reduction in the levels of fire protection and Emergency Medical Service manpower,
<br /> either through the closing of the Jame~o~n Avenue Fire Station, or by any other mean

<br /> that funds be restored to the School Board Budget.
<br />Ms. Patsy Barnes, 508 Cornick Road, representing Special Center School Bus Drivers, spoke
<br /> concerning School funds.
<br />Sharon Hughes, 539 S. McLean Street, representing Special Centers School Bus Drivers,
<br /> requested that the School Budget not be cut.
<br />Ms. Rosa Wells, 5632 High Street, W., Apt. D, representing Portsmouth Education Association,
<br /> spoke on the School Board Budget.
<br />Ms. Judith C. Apperson, 3816 Peach Orchard Circle, representing PEA, spoke concerning
<br /> equity of salary and fringe benefits between City employees and gchool Board employees
<br />Donald G. Wilson, 864 Parapet Road, Chesapeake, representing Portsmouth Teachers, spoke
<br /> concerning the budget cuts mn the School Budget.
<br />John Wallace, 300 Deal Drive,. spoke for self, in opposition of closing the Jamestown Fire
<br /> Station and reduction of the Fire Department personnel and requested that the teachers
<br /> be granted the same parity as city emFloyees.
<br />R. Wayne Nunnall?, Court & Queen Streets, representing Virginia Society for ~r~n Life,
<br /> Tidewater Chapter, presented the following petitions;requesting funds be held/~§~rnVi~
<br /> Medical School shows accountability:
<br /> "Whereas, the undersigned citizens of Tidewater (Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake,
<br /> Virginia Beach, Hampton, Yo~k County, ~lliamsburg) strongly oppose Virginia Medical
<br /> School's so calLe8 Test Tube Baby Clinic and supporting genetics laboratory at Norfolk
<br /> General Hospital; and
<br />
<br />~hereas, we believe these activities were established in defiance of overwhelming publi
<br />disapproval; and
<br />
<br />Whereas, continuing citizen opposition to these activities has seemingly been ignored
<br />by the established authorities of Eastern Virginia Medical School, Eastern Virginia
<br />Medical Authority, and Medical Center Hospitals, Inc.;and
<br />
<br />Whereas, according to internationally respected medical authority, notwithstanding clai
<br />to the contrary by sponsors of the local clinic, alternatives are presently available
<br />offering greater success rates, and techniques are developing which show far more promm;e
<br />than in vitro fertilization.

<br />NOW, THEREFORE, we respectfully petition the Mayor and HonoraBteMembers of City Council,
<br />zhe Governor Virginia, and the Honorable Members of the Virginia General Assembly,
<br />jointly and severally, to make continuing financial support of Eastern Virginia Medical
<br />School with citizen tax monmes contingent upon prior termination of the aforementioned

<br />Earl W. Bowman, 6 Kennedy Drive, Chairman, Parks & Recregtion Commission, spoke concern-
<br /> ing lost of employees due to CETA reduction and asked to restore iwo-senior recrea~
<br /> tional program leaders or return Six part-time employees that had been eliminated from
<br /> the budget.
<br />Cody D,l. Davis, 2742 Barclay Avenue, operator Scot's Service Station, spoke in opposition
<br /> of closing the Jamestown Fire Station.
<br />AlE J. Mapp, Jr., 2901 Tanbark Lane, representing Portsmouth Bicentennial Committee,
<br /> thanked the city for the support since the beginning of the bicentennial program, and
<br /> asked that the Committee be given S6,180 to participate mn the events marking the
<br /> 100th anniversary of Yorktown.
<br />V. J. Carlo, 4615 County Street, representing Central Midcity Civic League, spoke regard-
<br /> ing increases of the tax ordinances of the budget and ~n opposition of closing the
<br /> Jamestown Fire Station.
<br />Mrs. Rose C. Perkins, 406 Westmoreland Avenue, representing Central Midcity Civic League,
<br />spoke in oppositon of closing the Jamestown Fire Station and reduction of personnel.
<br />Mrs. Velma Tcpping, 4618 Snuth Street, representing Central Midcity Civic League, spoke
<br /> against the closing of Jamestown Station and spoke in favor of the teachers being pRid~
<br /> a decent salary, and object to any increase in property and utility taxes Unless these are
<br />Mrs. Freddie Molleen, 4603 Westmoreland Terrace, representing Central Midcity Civic Leagu,
<br /> spoke in support of school employes having parity with city employees.
