July 28, 2020

express their commentary live as would be the case during an in-person Council
meeting?

Bracey Hong Parr

52.My name is Toni Fogel, and I'd like to weigh in on the future of the Confederate
Memorial. I think that it is high time that both sides of this issue admit that the
Confederate Monument is more than just a statue. For many it represents states'
rights and the sacrifice that their ancestors made to that cause. For many others, it
glorifies those people who fought for the states' right to own other people. It does us
no good to say that the Civil War was not fought over slavery when every single
member of the Confederate Government has been quoted as saying that it was
indeed over slavery. I should know because my ancestors fought for the
Confederacy. I honestly have no wish to have them glorified at all.
It is my wish that the Confederate Monument be moved to a suitable resting place in
a cemetery. I hope that we can find a suitable memorial for where it once stood.
Toni Fogel
160 Williams Street

53. I would like to see the monument restored and moved to a more appropriate location
where it can be protected and honored. All citizens of Portsmouth deserve respect,
Past and present.
Colleen Jackson
1057 Spratley St
54. I again ask that you please consider removing and relocating the Confederate
Monument on Court Street. This monument has become an eyesore and public
safety problem as citizens across the City continue to protest for it to be taken down.
New state enabling legislation allowed Richmond, Norfolk and even Virginia Beach
to successfully remove Confederate monuments at the request of the community.
If the monument is to remind us of the Confederate dead, than let it be contextualized
properly in a cemetery or as photos and historical display at the Courthouse museum
or other site. Portsmouth has moved beyond the Confederacy, segregation and
racism, let's put this monument to rest in the graveyard where it belongs.
Carl Jackson
106 Rochdale Lane, Suffolk

55. Move the monument to a graveyard, museum but away from that downtown site.
Then at the new site put an explanation of the whole thing-- the negative and the
positive. It was put up to intimidate blacks not honor the war dead.
Pat Burns
1219 Portsmouth Blvd
