July 28, 2020

6. Preserve the valuable time capsule within....without allowing any tampering,
vandalism, or theft to that too.
Caroline Barnes
201 Elm Ave

32. My husband and I have lived in Olde Towne for 35 years. We believe the confederate
monument that was recently defaced should be removed and relocated (as is) to the
Appomattox National Battlefield where Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses
Grant. A plaque describing it’s history and demise should be included.
Katherine Schuhr & Timothy Lyke
325 Court St.

33. As a resident of Portsmouth, specifically a resident of Olde Towne, an area I have
loved calling home for several years and will continue to do so, I have always found it
upsetting and morally wrong that this "monument" is not only in the center of the area
but on a former slave auction site. If that is not the definition of intimidation and racism,
then I don't know what is. I had always hoped the city leaders would have removed it
every time the issue had been brought up over the years. This must be removed. I
have no objection to it being placed in a museum or other, non-taxpayer area where
people who wish to see the statue have access to it, but this vile creation should not
be a daily reminder of how little progress the country has made on these issues. All
citizens should feel welcome in their own
Erin Laffey
414 Middle Street, Apt H

34. I request removal of the Confederate Monument on Court Street. Also, if you have
legal authority, please ensure any new owner or keeper will not use or display the
monument or statues in a way that results in divisiveness within a community,
intentionally or not.
Stephen Ketcham
414 Crawford Street

35. How can we vote on moving the monument when the courts ruled years ago that the
city doesn’t own it? Only the owners can move it correct?
Thomas DuBois
4500 Regent Drive

36. Since long before I moved to Portsmouth last year I was shocked and disgusted that
a giant monument honoring Confederate Army soldiers would be placed in the middle
of town in a predominantly African American city. It’s long past time for the monument
to be removed. Honestly, there’s no need for monuments like this one, but if getting
rid of it completely isn’t a politically viable option, at least get it out of the city square.

Second, please tell whoever runs your social media accounts that URLs do NOT work
in Instagram comments. This should be obvious, but apparently it’s not since you keep
posting long URLs there. I’d be happy to help you with this at no cost. I do this for
several clients. Please let me know if I can be of service.
Will Lee
3205 Westwood Cres.

37. 1. At the meeting before last, the city attorney stated that they were still not prepared
to declare that the city owns the monument. Is that still the case?

2. City Council agreed to have the monument relocated in 2017. Why hasn't anything
been done in almost 3 years to move forward?

3. The new law which required certain steps be met before moving monuments did
not go into effect until July 1. Why then did the Council feel it had to comply with the
new law in JUNE when it had not yet gone into effect? To my understanding, laws that
are not yet in effect do not apply.
- Matt Cramer
