July 28, 2020

Confederacy and four of his brothers were killed. They owned no slaves and made
pottery for a living. It is believed my great grandpa was killed by a republican guard
shortly after getting home to TN. I almost cry when I think of it. It is wrong to wipe out
a whole chapter of american history. SC was the first to secede, There was a dispute
with the federal government as to was to guard an arsenal at Fort Sumter. The only
way they could get enough signers to secede was to include slavery in their state
constitution.
Charlene Sullins

11. I am a Portsmouth resident writing my concerns in regards to the statue downtown. I
have several concerns in regards to the statue being removed. But first and foremost
I would like to voice my concern at the fact council members (mayoral candidates)
were present when destruction of property occured earlier this summer at the hands
of senator Lucas, who does not have any control over city government. I'd like to know
why nothing has been done to the attendants or nothing released as far as information
on what will be occurring to these individuals present at a scene where the law was
broken in the face of police. Im very distrubed members of the public defenders office
are documented as destroying property. You can look on the current police active
arrest records and see how many destruction of property tickets are issued in this city
but yet not one person has been held accountable for their actions. How is that ok???

To comment on the removal of the statue, my main concern is where the money will
come from. Our schools are old, ill funded and fall behind in this area. Our city
employees mainly police and fire are understaffed and underpaid. Meanwhile we have
a city manager and other higher management being paid above and beyond for the
lack of work and leadership skills they posses. Our taxes are sky high and for what?
The city is a waste land. Its not policed well nor kept up. If the statue bothers people
so much let private interest groups pay for the removal. Cause let's be honest here
groups like Naacp and blm are getting away with anything in this city, you cant rent a
gazebo in city park to host a party but those private interest groups or senator lucas
supporters can bring the masses to the steps on city hall.

The city is going to see an exodus of hard working, tax paying and good citizens flee
this city to move elsewhere in hampton roads. Its a direct result at the ineffective
leadership that has consistently ran this city. Council should also be to blame for the
many problems in this city. You adults should be ashamed at the way you speak and
act, what an embarrassment.
Brooke Robinson
98 oregon avenue

12. Monument appears to be on private property from the 2018 court case...
So it's freedom of speech on private property...Simple...
Case closed...

13. Confederate Statue at Court and High Sts should be removed, relocated in
Confederate Cemetery.
Patricia Hines, 3201 Clover Hill Dr., 23703. Thank you.

14. The Confederate statue removed from Court and High Sts. Thank you,
Tyrone Hines

15. This is to express my opinion in regard to the confederate monument. I think it should
be destroyed. I view it as a tribute to rapist, human trafficking, slavery, and cruelty. I
have been a citizen of Portsmouth for over 30 years. Roxanne Richardson

16. It is my understanding that there will be a discussion about the Confederate
Monument on 7/28. There are many questions and issues that need resolution on this
matter. First of all how can the monument be moved at all? Is it not private property,
decided by a court case back in 2017? The Governor's new law says that state and
local monuments can saught to be moved but this is neither. Will the monument be
restored? It is in its present condition due to the fault of several City officials and
protesters that where allowed to tresspass and vandalize. Will there be discussion to
