May 12, 2020

Tax Increase:

1) This is ridiculous every time we the citizens turn around are taxes are being
raised. We have the highest taxes in the area. We the working class can not
afford for the city to continue to raise our taxes. During this pandemic when the
working class are continuing to try to make ends meet are having more taxes
imposed on us. Are you trying to make every citizen move out of the city. Stop
raising our taxes to line your pockets.
Nicole Carney

2) If you vote to increase fees and meal taxes you will not get my vote.

Tim Ferry

3) Help me understand how our city could try to treat its residents with such
disrespect?!! Other cities are trying their best to help the residents financially and
you want to attempt to raise the meal tax, Storm water, sewage fees , etc? We
have some of the poorest residents in the region and your response is to raise
utilities and meal taxes???? Other cities get rid of the meal tax and you want to
increase it????? We have residents that have nothing!!!!!!!!!!! They have lost all
income!!!! Can’t pay rent!!!! Can’t pay mortgages!!!! Can’t pay car insurance!!!!!
Can’t buy medicine!!!!! Can’t afford soap or napkins to use for toilet paper!!!!!..Yes
people are using napkins!!!!!!!!!....Your response as leaders is to raise the meal tax
and utility prices!!!!!??????? Do you all even understand the situation your
residents are in???? My neighbors are in an uproar!!!!!!!!!! If you all decide to follow
this ridiculous proposal you have destroyed this city during COVID and the media
will hear about!!!!! You prey upon the poor and less fortunate instead of trying to
help! Who proposes a hike in ANYTHING during this time!!!!!!! You all are shameful
beyond comprehension!!! You want to shut your citizens out of a meeting that
affects us???!!!! If this passes my response will be to buy all groceries and meals
in Chesapeake or Suffolk....until you all are out of office...sad part is that hurts my
city further..Needless to say you will never be elected again is an
understatement..I’ll make it a personal crusade to make sure no one in this city
forgets!!!
Gabriel Hall
3315 Carney Farm Lane
Portsmouth Virginia 23703

4) My husband and I have been Portsmouth Residents for over a
decade. Portsmouth has the potential to be one of the best cities in Hampton
Roads. However that is indeed not the case. Each year it seems our taxes are
raised in some capacity. True, you folks have kept the Real Estate taxes at the
same level for 5 years in a row and we are appreciative of that measure. It still
does not sit well with us knowing that yet once again our Water Rate, Sewer Rates
as well as Storm water utility fees are once again going to go up. When does this
stop? Why is it that Portsmouth has the highest tax rates in the Hampton Roads
region? My husband and I vehemently are opposed to these proposed tax hikes. I
feel confident in stating that there needs to be an overhaul of the amount of funds
given out to individuals whom do not contribute to the economics of this city. Stop
relying on the hard working tax paying residents to fund everything. Our city
deserves better than this.
Marcel and Jennifer Castro
4135 Bishops Place
Portsmouth VA 23703
