<br />June 23, 2018 <br /> <br />At a Called Meeting of the City Council on Saturday, June 23, 2018, there were <br />present: <br /> <br />Mayor John L. Rowe, Jr., Vice Mayor Elizabeth M. Psimas, William E. Moody, Jr., Ray <br />A. Smith, Nathan J. Clark, *Lisa L. Lucas-Burke. <br /> <br />17 - 225 - The Mayor called the meeting to order and welcomed all in attendance: <br /> <br /> "Please attend a Called Meeting of the City Council to be held at the Bide-A-Wee <br />Golf Course Pavilion, 1 Bide-A-Wee Lane, 9:00 a.m., Saturday, June 23, 2018 for the <br />purpose of a Portsmouth City Council Coffee Talk. <br /> <br /> In addition, you may consider a motion to go into a Closed Meeting. <br /> <br />By order of the Mayor." <br /> <br />The following concerns were discussed by citizens: <br /> <br />1. Pothole repairs needed on Effingham Street. <br /> <br />2. Left turn signal needed at George Washington Highway and Bainbridge Avenue. <br /> <br />3. Better maintenance of Effingham Street near tunnel. <br /> <br />4. Need for trade schools. <br /> <br />5. Increased marketing for tourism to bring people to the City. <br /> <br />6. More local acts and events at Portside. <br /> <br />7. Repairs to wayfinding signs to include Paradise Creek and Historic Cradock. <br /> <br />8. Concern with departments not helping citizens. Need for additional training. <br /> <br />9. Increased police patrols in neighborhoods. <br /> <br />10. Need for another Poverty Task Force meeting. <br /> <br />11. What does the City plan to do with Toll Study information? <br /> <br />12. Suggestion to combine the Social Services and Behavioral Healthcare Services <br />departments. <br /> <br />13. Better promotion of our schools. <br /> <br />14. Need for ideas on bringing new residents to Portsmouth and how to stop <br />residents from leaving. <br /> <br />15. Better notification of meetings. <br /> <br />16. Issue with speeding funeral escorts. <br /> <br />17. Concerns with opioid issues in the City. <br /> <br />18. Paving needed on George Washington Highway between Victory Boulevard and <br />Elm Avenue. <br /> <br />19. Increased salaries for lower wage employees. <br /> <br />20. Speed monitoring needed on Victory Boulevard and Afton Parkway. <br /> <br />On motion, meeting adjourned at 10:49 a.m. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
