Both groups have unanimously endorsed the <br /> ~'s recommendation for a site bounded on the south by Wythe <br />Street and on the east by First Street. <br /> <br /> The city's application to the National Oceanographic and <br />Atomospheric Admini§tration to house artifacts from the U.S.S. <br />Monitor requires the selection of a site for proposed Portsmouth <br />Museum. <br /> <br /> I would like to respectfully recommend approval of the identi- <br />fied site and request permission to begin q~e process through which <br />the property can be acquired. I highly recommend your support for <br />this project which has many positive implications for the City of <br />Portsmouth." <br /> <br /> Gregory Pomije, 427 London Boulevard, Chairman, Museum & Fine <br />Arts Commission, spoke in support of the resolution and asked that <br />the City Manager be authorized to acquire the land. <br /> <br /> Raymond Peabody, <br />Fine Arts Commission, <br />stated numerous civic <br /> pment. <br /> <br />5016 Oak Hill Avenue, representing Museum <br />spoke in support of the proposed museum and <br />and business origanizations had endorsed the <br /> <br /> Clyde Hoey, P. O. Box 1097, representing Hampton Roads Chamber <br />if Commerce, Public Businessman, and Seafarer Foundation, spoke in <br />support of the project and stated that the Seafarer Foundation had <br />bean formed to assist in securing funds fo[ this project. <br /> <br /> James L. Hughes, 317 Charlotte Drive, representing Norfolk <br /> Shipyard on behalf of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Commander, <br />and stated that NNSY endorses the proposal to build the MONITOR- <br /> Museum; also stated that the rail spur must remain open <br /> requested site approval for the museu~ be subject to maintainin <br /> rail service to the north end of the NNsY. <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by, Mrs,4 Webb, the follo¥i~$ <br />~tion was adopted, and by the following V~te: <br />'A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING CERTAIN PR~ERTY FOR DEVELOPMENT <br />OF THE MONITOR-MERRIMACK (CSS VIRGINIA) MUSEUM. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, by resolution gdoptedJanuar~ 14, 1986, the Council of <br />the City of Portsmouth endorsed the concept of creating a new <br />Portsmouth History Museum to be named the USS Monitor-Merrimack <br />(CSS Virginia) Museum and authorized application to the National- <br /> tn and Atmospheric Administration to house the artifacts from the <br /> Monitor in said Museum; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, by ordinance adopted January 28, 1986, the Council of <br />the City of Portsmouth commissioned a study by E. Verner Johnson & <br /> Inc. to evaluate certain sites pertaining to the loca- <br /> of said Museum; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, said study has designated the hereinafter-described <br />~roperty as the preferred site; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Museum <br /> oansion and Long-Range <br />2at,on of said site; and <br /> <br />and Fine Arts Commission and the Museum <br />Planning Committee have endorsed the desig <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the <br />in the best interest of the City <br />for the location and development <br /> <br />City of Portsmouth deems it to be <br />to officially designate said site <br />of the new Museum. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of ~he City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that the hereinafter-described property be, <br />the same hereby ~s, officially designated as-the site for the <br />location and development of the USS Monitor-Merrimack (CSS Virginia] <br /> <br /> <br />
