August 22, 2017 <br /> <br />17 - 374 - Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br /> Dr. Whitaker asked for and received a majority concurrence from City Council to direct <br /> <br />City Manager Patton to report back to City Council at the next Public Work Session <br />on the necessary steps for moving the Confederate monument from its present <br />location to Cedar Grove Cemetery. <br /> <br /> <br /> Mr. Cherry asked that City Attorney Ashby come back with a legal opinion on moving <br /> <br />the Confederate monument to Cedar Grove Cemetery. <br /> <br /> Dr. Whitaker asked that City Manager Patton and City Attorney Ashby provide their <br /> <br />reports at the next Public Work Session. <br /> <br />17 - 375 - Report on Pending Items <br /> <br /> Mr. Moody spoke on the following events: <br /> <br /> <br />-Sunset Thursdays every Thursday through September, 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. <br /> <br />-Olde Towne Farmer’s Market every Saturday through December, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. <br />at the corner of High and Court Streets. <br /> <br />-Resistance and Resilience: A Memoir Workshop of the Jim Crow Era, Friday, <br />August 25, 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the Portsmouth Colored Community Library <br />th <br /> <br />-47 Annual Seawall Art Show, Saturday August 26, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday, <br />August 27, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. <br /> <br />17 - 376 - Non-Agenda Speakers <br /> <br />st <br />1. Rosemary Ringer, 4516 Buckingham Drive, spoke in opposition to moving the <br />monument. <br /> <br />3. Stephen Hogg, 222 Charles Avenue, spoke in opposition to moving the monument. <br /> <br />4. Mark Miller, 200 Pine Bluff, spoke in opposition to moving the monument. <br /> <br />5. Joseph McClure, 37 Gillis Road, spoke in opposition to moving the monument and <br />asked that the monument be reinvented and rededicated. <br /> <br />6. Steve Carroll, 3112 Riveredge Drive, spoke in opposition to moving the monument. <br /> <br />7. Sergio Neal, 1560 Darren Circle, asked that City Council focus on the needs of the <br />citizens rather than the moving of the monument. <br /> <br />8. Clyde Toler, 1029 Blair Street, asked that City Council place a bench with a white <br />and black confederate soldier sitting together. <br /> <br />9. Delores Knight, 33 Kennedy Drive, spoke in opposition to moving the monument. <br /> <br />10.
