451 <br /> <br />September.8, 598- <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br /> 87-400 Councilman Simpson recommended that the <br />adop~ a resolution ~o keep Portsmouth General Hospital <br />City of Portsmouth. <br /> <br />City Council <br />in the <br /> <br /> The following citizens spoke in support of keeping Portsmouth <br />General Hospital in Portsmouth. <br /> <br />Dr. Jim Scutero, 448 Washington Street, representing the <br /> Medical Community. <br />MinisTer Rafiq Zaidi, 944 Lincoln Street, representing the <br /> Black Concerned Citizens. <br />Mary B. Shanks, 616 Rockbridge Road, repregenting the <br /> Federation of Civic Clubs of Portsmouth. (see Exhibit 87-400 <br />Rev. Jim Hundley, 1023 Naval Avenue, representing the <br /> Park View Civic League. <br /> <br /> Mayor Holley asked that <br />for the Council to work with <br />regarding this matter. <br /> <br />Councilman Simpson serve as liaison <br />other community, interest groups <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Simpson and seconded by Mr. Barnes, ~the foll~ <br />lng resolution was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING tHE CONCERN OF THE COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF PORTSMOUTH TO THE PROPOSED RgLOCATION OF PORTSMOUTH <br />GENERAL HOSPITAL TO A LOCATION OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF THE <br />CITY OF PORTSMOUTH. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the members of the Council of the City of Portsmouth <br />Virginia, have received information indicating that the Board of <br />Directors of Portsmouth General Hospital contemplating the sale of <br />Portsmouth General Hospital which may result in the relocation of <br />that medical facility to a location outside the boundaries of ~he <br />City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Portsmouth General Hospital has, since the turn of th~ <br />Century, provided exemplary health care to the citizens of ~his <br />City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the provision of health care is a major component in <br />determing the quality of life being provided for the citizens of a <br />City; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the relocation of Portsmouth General Hospital to a <br />location outside the City ~ould remove from the central core of thi <br />City,tke means to assure the availability of convenient health care <br />to our expanding population. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT R~SOLVED that the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia expresses its concern to the proposed relo- <br />cation of Portsmouth General Hospital to a location outside the <br />boundaries of this City and expresses its intention to enunciate~its <br />position at such time and in such forums as appropriate. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Manager and the City <br />Attorney are directed to monitor this matter with full authority to <br />take whatever steps are necessary to express the Council's position <br />at such time and in such forums as they deem appropriate, and that <br />the City Clerk be, and she hereby ~s, directed to forward copies of <br />this Resolution ~o all apprcpriate persons.' <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Lucas, Simpson, Webb, Holle <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> <br />
