"I am pleased to report that Chief James D. Holloway of the Technological Hazards Branch of the Virginia Department of Emergency Services has awarded Portsmouth a grant of $150,000. These fund will be used to implement a Level III Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team. The potential for serious accidents and releases involving hazardous materials poses a serious threat for the public health~ safety and welfare of citizens throughout Hampton Roads. The City of Portsmouth's Fire De~r~ment will act as the primary response team and will be responsible for the administration of this grant. The cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach will furnish response personnel to the composite regional ~eam. Grant funds will be used to purc~has'~ the' necessary equipment and supplies for the team and training~will be conducted by the Virginia Department of Emergency Services. The grant funds of $150,000 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Services represents 100% State funding ~nd n~ local match is required. I recommend the acceptance of this Level III Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team grant for the region and the appropriat'ion Of $150,000 to support the program."
