Holloway of <br />the Technological Hazards Branch of the Virginia Department of <br />Emergency Services has awarded Portsmouth a grant of $150,000. <br />These fund will be used to implement a Level III Hazardous <br />Materials Emergency Response Team. <br /> <br /> The potential for serious accidents and releases involving <br />hazardous materials poses a serious threat for the public <br />health~ safety and welfare of citizens throughout Hampton Roads. <br />The City of Portsmouth's Fire De~r~ment will act as the primary <br />response team and will be responsible for the administration of <br />this grant. The cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach will <br />furnish response personnel to the composite regional ~eam. <br />Grant funds will be used to purc~has'~ the' necessary equipment and <br />supplies for the team and training~will be conducted by the <br />Virginia Department of Emergency Services. <br /> <br /> The grant funds of $150,000 from the Virginia Department <br />of Emergency Services represents 100% State funding ~nd n~ local <br />match is required. <br /> <br /> I recommend the acceptance of this Level III Hazardous <br />Materials Emergency Response Team grant for the region and the <br />appropriat'ion Of $150,000 to support the program." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mrs. Lucas and seconded by Mr. Barnes, ~to accept <br />~he grant and the following ordinance was-adopted on first <br />reading and~by ~e fo/lowing vote: <br /> <br /> "AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $150,000.
