MiChelte Norfleet~ <br />7th grade stUdent from Churchland Jr, iHigh School !%d~he ~ <br />Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. <br /> <br /> Mayor Webb welcomed all visitors in attendance. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Epperson, and seconded by Mr, King, the <br />minutes of a Called Meeting of January 22, 1991; the minutes of <br />a RegUla~ meeting Of JanUary 22~ 1991; and~minutes of a Special <br />Called Meeting of February 6, 1991, to be approved as received, <br />and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> 91-48 - Resolution endorsing the proposal to name t~e new <br />1-664 bridge tunnel as the USS Monitor-CSS Virginia Memorial <br />Bridge Tunnel. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr~ Clemons and seconded by Mrs. Lucas, the <br />following resolution was adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT OF THE <br />COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH FOR NAMING <br />THE 1-664 BRIDGE TUNNEL, T~E "U.S.S. MONITOR <br />- C,SiS. VIRGINIA MEMORIAL BRIDGE TUNNEL." <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1861-62, in Gosport Navy Yard in the City of <br />Portsmouth, the U~S~S. Merrimac, a partly burned U.S. steam <br />frigate, was converted into the C;S~S. Virginia, the w0rld~s <br />first armored ship; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the C.S.S. Virginia and the U.S.S. Monitor, a <br />federal ironclad, 'fOrever changed the course of naval warfare <br />and ushered in the era of iron and steam by doing battle on <br />MarCh 9, 1862; and ~ <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the new 1-664 bridge-tunnel is being built across <br />Hampton Roads,~ the ~!cene of that historic naval engagement. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it hereby expresses its <br />enthusiastic support for naming the new 1-664 Bridge-Tunnel, <br />the "U.S.S. Monitor - C.S.S. Virginia Memorial Bridge Tunnel." <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be, and she <br />hereby is, directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the <br />Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation. <br /> <br />Ayes: Clemons, Corprew, Epperson, Hawks, King, Lucas, Webb <br />Nays: N~ne <br /> <br /> 91-49 - Mayor Webb presented a resolution to Stephen <br />Thompson of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Foundation for the <br />proposed naming of the new 1-644 bridge tunnel as the USS <br />Monitor-CSS Virginia Memorial Bridge Tunnel. <br /> <br /> <br />
