H~wks, <br /> Lee E.~R~ng,~5~Louise~ Lucas, ~U...Wayne~Orton, ~City <br /> Manager~ Stuart E~ Ka%z, City Attorney~ <br /> <br /> Meghan Disbrow, First Grade Student of Churchland Primary <br />School opened the meeting with prayer followed by Timothy <br />Comstock, First Grade Student of Churchland Primary with the <br />Pledge of Al~±~n~e' to~th~ Flag.~ ' <br /> <br /> Mayor Webb welcomed~all in attendance. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Epperson and seconded by Mr. Clemons, the <br />minutes~of a Called Meeting of August 27, 1991 to be approved <br />as received, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> 91-310 - Resolution honoring the B-29 Superfortress <br />Aircraft named "City of Portsmouth". <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Clemons and seconded by Mr. Epperson, the <br />following resolution was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION HONORING THE B-29 SUPERFORTRESS AIRCRAFT <br />NAMED "CITY OF PORTSMOUTH." <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the United States of America's involvement in <br />World War II brought American forces into the air war over the <br />Pacific almost a half century ago and caused the development of <br />the B-29 Superfortress; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1945 A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr., of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, found himself assigned to the crew of the B-29 <br />Superfortress, designated K-30; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Mr. Scribner convinced his crewmates to name-the <br />bomber in honor of his hometown: "The City of Portsmouth," and <br />the new logo painted on this aircraft displayed a flag which <br />pinpointed Portsmouth's location on a United States map; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the bomber named "The City of Portsmouth" was <br />able to lift aloft on wing spans that measured 141 feet, with a <br />fuselage length of 99 feet to deliver the most devastating <br />aerial bombardment in history, flying nineteen courageous <br />bombing missions; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the crew of the "City of Portsmouth" having <br />proven themselves and their courage and determination are <br />characteristic of those who helped America win the war. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE~ BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the Council hereby recognizes the <br />B-29 Superfortress named "City of Portsmouth," and its officers <br />and men who served on the bomber, for their dedication to duty <br />in the defense of our nation. <br /> <br />Ayes: Clemons, Corprew, Epperson, King, Hawks, Lucas, Webb <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />Presentation: <br /> <br /> Resolution presented to Ken Scribner honoring the B-29 <br />Superfortress Aircraft named "City of Portsmouth". <br /> <br /> <br />
