"The Director of Public ~tilit~es~has requested an appropriation of $60,000 from the Public Utility Capital Improvements Fund to continue the Department's multi-year replacement program of the strategic ~alves that control the flow of water from the City's Lake~.Kilb.y Water Treatment Plant in Suffolk into PortsmDuth. The~e a~e ~ to~al of ninety (90) 14", 20", 24" and 30" valves on the transmission mains controlling the flow and they rar~e in,age from 60 to I02 years. These valves are unreliable a[ bes~ and are in many cases inoperative. Past appropriations have funded the replacement of twenty of these valves, and this appropriation will fund the replacement of ten additional valves. The actual replacement occurs during low water demand periods in the fall and spring to minimize customer impacts and this work is accomplished by the Public Utilities Construction Crew.
