November 27,2007 - City Manager's Report - 07 - 479 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $5,653.94 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance of the U.S. Department of Justice and appropriating the same amount in the FY 2007-2008 Grants Fund for the purchase of bulletproof vests by the Portsmouth Police Department. Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community, and Pride of Past, Promise of Future. Background: . The Portsmouth Police Department has received grant funding of $5,653.94 from the Department of Justice - Bureau of Justice Assistance to reimburse 50% of the cost expended for the purchase of bulletproof vests for the Police Department and Sheriff's Office personnel patrolling city streets. Discussion: . These funds will be used to offset some of the costs for the purchase of bulletproof vests for the police department and Sheriff's Office personnel. Financial Impact: . The grant award amount is $5,653.94 of Department of Justice funds for the purchase of bulletproof vests for Portsmouth Police and Sheriff's Department. There is no City match required and no continuing obligation once the grant has ended. Staff Recommends: Adoption of proposed ordinance. The Chief of Police or his designee will provide grant management and oversight. Motion by Mr. Heretick, and seconded by Mr. Moody, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $5,653.94 FROM THE BUREAU OF JUSTICE ASSISTANCE OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND APPROPRIATING THE SAME AMOUNT IN THE FY 2007-2008 GRANTS FUND FOR THE PURCHASE OF BULLETPROOF VESTS BY THE PORTSMOUTH POLICE DEPARTMENT." Smith, Randall Nays: None 07 - 480 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $1,400 from Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia and appropriating the same amount in the FY 2007 -2008 Grants Fund to fund a DVD library and a quarterly speaker's program at the Senior Station. Vision Principle: Lifelong Learning Community, and Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community. Background: . The purpose of this grant is to provide a DVD library at the Senior Station on "Senior Specific" issues relating to health, nutrition, finance, relationships, etc. and for quarterly presentations on current senior topics by qualified speakers.
