KatZ;~ Cityi:Attg~ney~ % <br /> <br /> Dana Weaver, op~ned the meeting with prayer followed-by <br />the Pledge~of Allegiance to the Elag, led by Kristin Sparks. <br />· ney are t~elfth grad~ ~tudents at Woodrow Wilson High School. <br /> <br /> Mayor Webb welcomed all in attendance. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Epperson and seconded by Mr. Clemons, ~J~ <br />the minutes Of a Calle'd Meeting of Kpr~l 'Z8~ 1992, minu~te~ of a <br />Regular Meeting of April 28, 1992, and minutes a Called Meeting <br />of May 6, 1992, and minutes of a Special Meeting of May 6, <br />1992, to be approved as received, and was adopted by unanimous <br />vote. <br /> <br />92-172 - Resolution of support and~pp~eciation of the Council <br /> for an Area-Wide Crusade in our city on September <br /> 13-17, 1992. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Hawks and s~co~d~d by Mr. King, the <br />following resolution was adopted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, more than twenty-eight'Portsmouth-area churches <br />and one mission have organized a planning committee for an <br />Area-Wide Crusade to take place in our city on September 13-17, <br />1992; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, "God hohors Plann~in:~'' ~long with ~a.greement~ <br />interest between all parties involved if'there is to be unity <br />in developing the organization required for a successful ~ <br />crusade; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, working with the Portsmouth Baptist Association, <br />Rev. Alan Moor, Dr. Skip Hathaway, and Rev. Bob Baker have <br />organized an Executive Committee that consists of Rev. Allen <br />McFarland, Mrs. Lue English, Captain A~t Penhale, Rev. Charles <br />Bowens, Rev. James Harris, Rev. Neal Johnson, Rev. Tom Potter, <br />and Sheila Powell Pittman; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Bailey E. Smifh has been called to serve as <br />the speaker for five crusade meetings. Dr. Smith has been <br />hailed by U. S. News Today & World Report as a "Leader;" by <br />Christianity Today as an "Inerrancy Superstar;" Newsweek calls <br />him "a capable and growing leader;" Time "a formidable figure, <br />a firey red-haired old style prairie stemwinder;" and in Los <br />Angeles, "his.oratorical skills have him one of Baptists more <br />popular preacher~;" and ~' <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this evangelistic crusade involves any and all <br />denominations in our area and will include all races; with the <br />major thrust being to unite the people of Portsmouth for things <br />that are good and wholesome and to bring in people who can <br />effectively address issues such as drug abuse; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, plans are pending for a Portsmouth Rally to be <br />held on September 12 at Frank D. Lawrence Stadium, and the <br />September Crusade to be held in the Gym at Churchland High <br />School; and <br /> <br /> <br />
