John Lifsey, 229 Mount Vernon Avenue, spoke in support of this item. <br /> <br />Motion by Ms. Psi mas, and seconded by Mr. R. Smith, to concur with the <br />recommendation of the Planning Commission that CA-07 -02 be approved on first <br />reading, and was denied by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Psimas, D. Smith, R. Smith <br />Nays: Heretick, Moody, Randall, Holley <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. D. Smith, and seconded by Mr. Moody, to strike Item 07-71 (h) from <br />the May 22, 2007 Agenda, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, D. Smith, R. Smith <br />Nays: Holley <br /> <br />- City Manager's Report - <br /> <br />07 - 220 - Adoption of an ordinance amending Appendix A of the City Code to increase <br />court fees allocated to court security from $5.00 to $10.00 for criminal and traffic <br />convictions. Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community. <br /> <br />Background: <br />. Effective July 1S\ the General Assembly has authorized localities to increase <br />court fees collected in criminal and traffic cases for court security purposes from $5.00 <br />to $10.00. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />. The increase in fees collected will help to defray the costs of courtroom security <br />and will be paid only by those defendants who are convicted of criminal or traffic <br />violations. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br />. There will be no cost to the City resulting from adoption of this ordinance. <br /> <br />Staff Recommends: <br />Adoption of proposed ordinance. Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a <br />Sense of Community. <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />. The Courts will begin collecting the fees from defendants convicted of criminal <br />and traffic violations beginning July 1, 2007. <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Heretick, and seconded by Ms. Randall, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"ORDINANCE TO AMEND APPENDIX A TO THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (2006) TO INCREASE COURT FEES FOR CRIMINAL <br />AND TRAFFIC CODE CONVICTIONS." <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, D. Smith, R. Smith, Holley <br />Nays: None <br />
