Wareheim Foundation and appropriating said amount in the FY 2006-2007 Grants Fund Budget for motorcycle communications equipment for the Sheriff's Department. Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community. Background: . The Portsmouth Sheriff's Office has been operating a Motorcycle Unit since 1991. . This one time award will fund the purchase of five (5) motorcycle helmet communication systems, which allow for hands free wireless communication that also enables the deputies to move from the motorcycle and maintain communication. Discussion: . The E. C. Wareheim Foundation has made available $6,600 in funds to provide for the purchase of this equipment locally. . The Motorcycle Unit provides funeral escorts and traffic enforcement. Each of these duties carries inherent situations that impact officer safety and requires the use of radio communications. Providing funeral escorts is normally done using two or more motorcycles. Riders must be able to communicate with each other so that traffic can be managed and accidents avoided during the escort. Deputies working traffic stops must be able to communicate with the dispatcher and other deputies during traffic stops. . Between January 1, 2006 and September 30, 2006 the Motorcycle Unit provided 661 funeral escortslassists and issued 1,843 summonses. Financial Impact: . There is no financial impact on the City.
