<br />182 <br /> <br />Januarv 11. 2005 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, decommissioning the Kennedy would be harmful to the nation, the <br />region, the City of Portsmouth, the global war on terrorism, and the cause of freedom <br />throughout the world; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, hereby supports the continued operation and requirement for the <br />USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) to remain a commissioned aircraft carrier in the service <br />of the United States Navy." <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psimas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />~ Councilman Whitehurst asked that the Military Affairs Committee look into <br />collecting infonmation on the status and impact on the local economy of the repairs of <br />the USS John F. Kennedy and express their opinion on retaining the Kennedy. <br /> <br />~ Councilwoman Randall spoke on the joint City Council/School Board Committee <br />and the upcoming dinner. Also, she commented on support of Empowerment 2010 <br />request of funds for the HOPE VI project for the City and announced information about <br />the Community Meetings for 2005. <br /> <br />~ The City Manager asked for two Council members to serve as Code Enforcement <br />Task Force members to review Chapter 16 of the City Code and the Mayor <br />recommended Councilman Whitehurst and Councilwoman Randall. <br /> <br />05 - 18 - Report on Pending Items <br /> <br />There were no pending items. <br /> <br />05 - 19 - Non-Agenda Speakers <br /> <br />1. Mark Geduldig-Yatrofsky, 363 Middle Street, spoke on the risks of embracing a new <br />Vision. <br /> <br />2. Raleigh Harsley, 2124 Peach Street, President Lee Ward Civic League, spoke on <br />concerns about trash in his area and violations of put-outs.
