April 13, 2004 <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA that the City Council hereby extends to its colleagues in the <br />City of Norfolk, the Hampton Roads Partnership, the Norfolk Baseball Company, and all <br />those involved in this effort its sincere best wishes and whole-hearted support in their <br />goal of acquiring the Montreal Expos and bringing a professional sports franchise to our <br />region." <br /> <br />Ayes: Benn, Griffin, Moody, Pitts, Randall, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />- New Business - <br /> <br />04 - 143 - Boards and Commissions <br /> <br />There were no appointments. <br /> <br />04 - 144 - Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br />Councilman Pitts spoke about rebuilding losses from Hurricane Isabel, and <br />explained that the timeline to rebuild has been extended to December 31, 2004. <br /> <br />Councilman Benn spoke on today's positive public work session. <br /> <br />Councilman Whitehurst spoke on the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon, May 2, 2004. <br /> <br />Councilman Moody spoke on the number of streetlights reported out in the City and <br />reported on a meeting with Dominion Virginia Power with regard to this matter. <br /> <br />Councilwoman Randall thanked the Department of Social Services for helping with a <br />homeless family. Also, she thanked Toora Burton for the musical selection on Child <br />Abuse Prevention. <br /> <br />Councilman Pitts complimented the Brighton/Prentis Park Civic League on awarding <br />and honoring people in their Neighborhood Watch for keeping crime down. Also, he <br />attended the Gosport Awards Banquet for public safety. <br /> <br />Councilman Moody thanked the City Manager and staff for the revitalization plan for <br />Cradock due in September. <br /> <br />03 - 145 - Non-Agenda Speakers <br /> <br />1. Billy Moon, 3912 Anchor Avenue, expressed thanks for taking care of the problems <br /> he has reported. <br /> <br />Richard Gaddis, 2416 Lakewood Lane, spoke on the history of funds for the Police <br />and Fire Retirement System, and requested putting off the $380,000 contribution to <br />the system, and letting actuaries work with retirees to recommend what should be <br />done with the money. <br /> <br />3. Mark Geduldig-Yatrofsky, 363 Middle Street, spoke on the budget and tax increases. <br /> <br />4. Richard C. Journee III, 309 Thelmar Lane, spoke on additional support for disabled <br /> Police and Fire retirees. <br /> <br />5. Lamar Norman, 104 Diamond Avenue, spoke on the March of Dime Walk-A-Thon <br /> and encouraged participation of others. <br /> <br />Martin Smith-Rodden, 1731 Barron Street, expressed gratitude for the efforts of <br />Council to preserve the Sexual Assault Nursing Program at Maryview Medical <br />Center. <br /> <br /> <br />
