C. <br /> <br />Gentlemen:--Your Joint 0ommittee on City <br /> of Portsmouth <br /> <br />Extension to whom was referred the question of advisability of annexing to the City <br /> <br /> certain adjacent territory in Norfolk county, respectfully submit: <br /> <br /> We have given the Eatter patient and careful consideration: and while there sro differences of <br />opinion as to the terms uoon which the said territory would prefer to come into the City, we believe <br />that its sentiment generally is favorable therefor--the union would redound to the ~terial interest <br />of both the City and the territory. <br /> <br /> In regard to the question of taking care of the territory, as required by law, we report that <br /> <br /> we h~ve had several con-eerences with the Joint Pit, nee Committee on that lineand believe we have <br />reached a satisf~ctor~ conclusion. <br /> <br /> ~ne law on the subject~of cities ~nnexing territory is explicit and definite: and it is there- <br />fore recommended that the City Attorney be instructed to prepare an ordinance: ms provided by /aw:_ <br />for annexing the following described territory, permitting its p~esent county tax r~te for ~ oeriod <br />of five (5) years after a~nex~tion to the City: <br /> <br /> "Beginning at the southwest corner of ~hird and Jefferson streets; thence southw~rdly along the <br />west side of ,Third street to the south side of Key Road: or 0ossaek street; thence westwardly along <br />Zhe~south side ~of COssack street to corner of U. S. N~vy Yard property; thence southwardly along U. <br />S. Navy Yard Property to the south side of the right of way of River Front Railroad Company; thence <br />weStwardly along the southern boundary of the ri~qt of way of the s~id River Front Railroad Compar~ <br />to the east side. of ~reen street; thence southwardly along the east side of Green street to a point <br />e_euidistant between Summit and 0enter avenues; thence westwsrdlydown center line of blocks, equi- <br />distant between Summit and Center avenues: to the center of B. street; thence nor,~mrdly down center <br />of B street to Key Ro~d, or Cossack street; thencenorthwardly doyen line separating the Prentice <br />Place Y~nd Compar~v~ property from that of the l~hitehead property to the center of Duke street; then- <br />ce westwardly down the center of Duke street: or Duke street extended: to the center of Florida ave- <br />nue; thence northwardly dora% the center of Florida avenue: or Florida mvenue extended~ to the center <br /> <br /> <br />
