action to be taken by said branches in oonneetion with the decease of John J. King, member of the

Ve~W t~ul~,

Prest., C. C.

(Si~ned) C.W. Walker,~
Prest., B. of A.

·hereupon, it was moved that a committee of three be appointed to draft suitable resolutions of
respect to the memory of Mm. King.

The motion was adopted; and the Ch~ir appointed Messrs. John B. Hall, O~ C. ~ulpepper and E. L.
Barlow the committee.

The committee retired and, in a few minutes, reported the following resolutions:

"It is with deep regret that we meet here this evening to express ou~ sense of loss in the death
of Hr. John J. King, and it is especially sad that we should so meet on his forty-second birth day.

~The deceased, though a young man, was for many years a member of the City Ocuneil and had re-
tained such position fromJul¥, 1595 until the day of his death. Be had been, from time to time,
chairman of some of the most important committees of the body and he took front rank as a capable~
energetic, earnest and painstaking leader. He was a ready debater and a good parliamentarian; an~,
though at times unsuccessful in the measures which he ad~ooated, he always retired from the field of
contest in a most courteous ma~ce~ and without any display of feeling for his defeat.

"In reeognltion of his excellent qualities of both ~ead and heart he was elected for four terms
successively as ~ presiding officer of the Council, and he filled the position so ably that he won
the respect and esteem of all with whom hew as associated.

"Mr. King had, appar~entiy, a long and useful life before him and was continuing in the service
of the city which he loved so well when his early and sudden death came as a shock to his friends and

to the community.

"Therefore, we believe it to be emminently proper that this body should give expression to its

~orrow~ for the loss it has sustained in so valuable associate~ and hence resolve--
~ ~1. That in the death of Mm. Joh~ J. King the City has lost one of her most valuable sons and

servants and the Council of ~ortsmouth~ one of its most effielent members.

"2. That we tender the bereaved wife and family of the deceased our earnest and heartfelt sym-
pathy in thei~ g~eat affliction.

"3- That the Couneit' assemble in this room at 2-30 P. M~. Wednesday, ~nd from hence attend the
fune~l in a bod~v.

"4. That these resolutions be spread on the records of the Council; that a copy of them be sent
to the f&mily of the deceased: and that the~ be published in th~ Pn~t~mn~e.h ~e~,
