1911.

An Ordinance to Prohibit the Swinging ef Gates or Deers OUtWardly over the Streets of the City.

"i disapprove of the above ordinance to prohibit the swinging of gates or doc'rs outwardly ever
the streets of the City.
raThe property oreo_ers have a right to the reasonable use of the streets. The swinging of gates
or doors outwardly would inconvenience the public no more than, if as much as, the passage of vehi-
cles across the sidewalks from roadway te let on which there may be stableS, the rolling ef barrels
o~:bexes across the sidewalk, the unloading of carts, wagons backing up to the curb and unloading by
means of a plank from wagon to the door ef the building, the erection of porches on the sidewalk,
the placing of boxes, barrels, f~dit-stam, dS, &c., on the sidewalk; a~ud the adoption of this ordinance
would cause quite an expense to those who have gates er doors swinging outwardly.
~These who d-o net keep their gates el, sod er per, it them te remain for any length ef time swing-
ing on the sidewalk~ so as ts interfere w'ith~ the use of the sidewalk c~uld be fined for hav~ng an eb-
stru. ctlen', and the police force have been directed to report ~ll such perseus a_~ter proper warning.
mil the ordir~ance is necessary, it should be made the duty ef the poiiOe force as Well as the
Street Inspector to see te the enfercemeht of the sa~.
~Believing that the objections raised to gates swimming outwardly can be overcome by ordinances
now in effect, I disapprove ef the above ordinance requiring gates or deers to swing in'wardly.

Davis R~ed, Nayor..

An Ordinance to Rename Certain Streets in the Seventh Ward of the City.

mi disapprove of the ordinance to rename certain streets in the s~venth Ward.
~The names of streets should net be changed unless there is a Eo~d reason for ohan~!~'the names.
~There is a geed reason for changing the names of all of the streets whose hemes the ordinance
proposes to change, except the first two and, as the object of the ordinance to rename the streets
is te prevent confusion, the n~me of the third street, Park Avenue, should be ether than Parker Ave-
r~de, as there is a Pa~ker street in the Seventh Ward ~nd the names a~e too near alike.
mi see ne good reason for ~he change of the name of Cossack street to ~aval Place. There is a
Eaval Avenue in the Fifth Ward, and if the name must be changed it should be some name not so similar
to the street in the Fifth Ward.
"~.
