<br /> Messrs. Hall and Nicholson spoke generally for the City taking over the lights.
<br /> Mr. Brinson favored restricting the "~ite Way" to High street.
<br /> After considerable discussion of the matter, Mr. Davis moved that all street lights
<br />paid for by citizens on High, Effingham and County streets be paid for by the City for the mon-
<br />th of l~arch, and that the Finance Committee be instructed to bring in an appropriation to cover
<br />sa~e. The motion was adopted.

<br /> Mr. Markham asked, and obtained permission, to file for the present a report of the Joint
<br />Committee from the Councils of the City of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Business Men's Asso-
<br />ciation concerning a Public Dock.
<br />
<br /> The City Attorney~ who was present, called attention ~o a bill now before the General As-
<br />sembly, for leasing or selling t~e Norfolk County Ferries. He said that:~while_~he had O. K'd.
<br />the bill as City Attorney, the O. E. was intended to show merely that the bill was in legal
<br />shape, and not that he approved of its provisions.
<br /> The statement of the City Attorney brought forth caustic remarks from several Councilmen
<br />concerning the bill, by whom it was prepared, sent to the General Assembly, &c. The bill was
<br />objected to very emphatically, and finally, the following resolution offered by Mr. Hawks was
<br />adopted:
<br /> "Resolved: That a committee of two from the Common Council and one from the Board
<br />of Aldermen be appointed to take such steps as they might deem expedient to have our represen-
<br />tatives in the Legislature withdraw the bill pending there for lease or sale of the Norfolk
<br />County Ferries."
<br />
<br /> Whereupon, the following members were appointed to the committee under this resolution:
<br /> Messrs. Hawks and Baker from the Common Council, and ~r. Davis from the Board of
<br />Aldermen.
<br /> On motion, the City Attorney was added to said committee.
