<br /> A communication was received Tr-om the Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Oomp~u~ in which
<br />it requested permission to examine records in office of the Inspector of.Plumbing, and said com-
<br />munication was referred to the Sewerage Committee.
<br />
<br /> A request was read from Wm. M. Smith, Superintendent of the Fire Alarm System fez an in-
<br />crease of salary, and for permission to take a leave of absence for five days.
<br /> On motion, the first request was referred to the Finance 0om~ittee,~ and the second was
<br />granted, subject to approval of Chief of the Fire Department.
<br />
<br /> A petition was read from Dz. ~eo. H. Cart and sund~y others for a light at the corner of
<br />Ca~oline and Green streets, and said petition was referred to the Light Committee.
<br />
<br /> A communication was read l~om the Inspector of Plumbing, in which ham ade report of his
<br />attendance at the Convention of Plumbing Inspectors and Sanitary Engineers held in Bt. Louis,
<br />Mo., June A--~-Sth.
<br /> He said that, as a result of the information gained at this meeting, he would request to
<br />have referred to the Committee on Sewerage the advisability of changing the Plumbing Regulations
<br />so as to have them conform to the "standard."
<br /> The request of the Plumbing Inspector was referred to the Sewerage Committee, and the
<br />communication was ordered to file.
<br />
<br /> A request of the Chambers Fire Company
<br />leave of absence the first week in September to go with the Company on a trip to Pennsylvania,
<br />was granted, subject to approval Of Chief of tha Fire Department.~

<br /> The Sixth Ward Board presented a bill against the City for $!IS.BB, to cover cost of per-
<br />manent pavement laid at the intersection of Chestnut a~d County streatsr from the original City
<br />line in the center of the street to the asphalt pavement, and said bill .was referred to the
<br />nance Committee.
<br />
<br /> By the same, a bill for $7,050.5~ against the Virginia Railway & Power Company~ to cover
<br />its proportion of cost of gradmng, lowering tracks, putting in concrete foundation, and pavi~g
<br />in the Sixth Nsmd.
<br /> Mr. Parker stated that there was ~ legal questZon involved as to whe~he= the Virginia
<br />Railway& Powe~ Company should pay this~bill, and as it had been suggested by the Company's at-
<br />torney that the City enter a f~iendly suit against the Company to have this matter settled, he
<br />would move that. the City Attorney be instructed to enter such friendly suit.
<br /> The motion was adopted.

<br /> By the same, a request that arrangement be made with ~he banks to increase the amount re-
<br />centlyborrowed for the Sixth Ward from $1B, 000.00 to $B4,000.00, in order to pay a balance due
<br />a contractor for paving on County street.
<br /> On motion, the request was referred to the Street Oommittee.

<br /> On'motion o~ Mr. Reynolds, the Mayor was requested to consider whether a bill board being
<br />erected at the southwest dorner of Third and Lincoln streets would be a nuisance to residents
<br />of that locality.
