<br /> A reqaest of the City Clerk for thirty days leave of absence after the next meeting of the
<br />Board of Aldermen was, on motion, granted.

<br /> On motion of Mr..Reynolds, the Council decided to go into an election to fill a vacancy
<br />on the body from the Fourth Ward, caused by reaignation of Ohas. J. Withy.
<br /> Whereupon, Mr. Reynolds nominated S. B. Laylor to fill said vacancyand he was elected
<br />by the following vote:
<br /> Ayes--~orbitt, Hall, White, Namvey, Herbert, Moore, Johnson,
<br /> Lassiter, Reynolds, Cross, Hawks, Morgan, Houghton, Cooke, 14.

<br /> The Chairman of the Finance Committee stated that there were bills against the Contingent,
<br />Street, t~.blic Property, LSght, and Police Departments, and Sixth and Seventh Wards, to amount
<br />of about $1,382.~5, for whmch no appropriatio~ h~d been provided, and he moved that said bills
<br />be referred to the Finance Committee fo~ exammnationjand recommendation for payment such of
<br />them as should be paid. The motion was adopted.

<br /> A request was received from the Treasurer to borrow $~0,090. to meet 0urrent Expenses for
<br />the month of July, i~iA, and also. to renew notes to amount 9f SE0,$80.~5~due in July.

<br />renew notes to amount of $~0,880.55 was granted and by the following vote:

<br /> Mr. Johnson moved that the rules be suspended to authorize the expenditure of a sum not
<br />exceeding $50. to put in a bath tub in house of the Union Fire Co. The rules were suspended
<br />and the expenditure authorized.

<br /> On motion of Mr. Johnson, the matter of improving condition of dmi~king ~ydrants at the
<br />corner of E2~i~'~ham~andFSouth streets was referred to Water Committee with power to act.

<br /> Mr. Houghton moved that the Mayor be requested to have removed~a pole of the Virginia Ry.
<br /> Power ~o. at the corner of Glasgow street and Ninth avenue, said pole carrying a wire which
<br />i~terferes with the ~zection of walls of the new Calvar~ Baptist Church.
<br /> The motion was adopted.
