June 8, 191~. <br /> <br /> The report of the Committee having been re'ad, N~r. Reynolds moved that it be considered <br />by sections. <br /> Mr. Moore (Joe. S.) moved to amend, that Oh~y such sections as are objected to be discussed <br />and voted on separately. The amendment was.adopted. <br /> <br /> The matter of ~nning a pipe line across Harrison street to empty onthe east side of Wash- <br />ingmon was first taken up and discussed by Messrs. Reyaold$ andJEerbert. <br /> Finally, Mr~ Herbert moved that the matter be sent back to the Finance Committee to make <br />the appropriation of $?50.00. The motion was lost. <br /> <br />Next,~{he matter of an appropriation to repair and enlarge Grimes Battery G~nRoom was <br />taken up, and questions asked a~ to why the appropriation was not recommended by the Committee. <br /> Then the Chairman of the Finance Committee explained why the appropriation was not recom- <br />mended. <br /> <br /> ~ith regard to the purchase of a testing machine for lights, Mr. Laylor moved to amend, <br />that the Finance Committee be authorized to make an appropriation to purchase said machine. <br /> The amendment was ~dopted. <br /> <br /> With regard to the petition of the Chief of Police for two more men fo~ the police force, <br />Mr. ~right (Earl H.) spoke of the necessity f~ these policemen and moved that the matter be <br />recommitted. The motion was adopted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Reynolds objected to the recommended appropriation not to exceed $50. for books, <br />to be used by the Plumbing Board and moved that the appropriation be not allowed. <br /> The motion was adopted. <br /> <br />Then the report of the Committee, as amended, was.adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes--Oorbitt, Herbert, Branch, ~hite, Cain, Hanvey, Moore (Jos. <br /> Hutohins, Whitehurst, Laylor, Reynolds, ~right (Earl H.), Houghton, <br /> ~ .Baldwin, Moore (Robt. Common Co~ncil--Board of Aldermen. <br /> <br />Gentlemen:-- ¥ou~ Street <br /> <br />Committee re- <br /> <br />spectfuliy reports herein concerning the following matters referred to the Joint Street Commit- <br /> <br />tee May t1-!8 and February 9, 1915:. <br /> <br />Referred by Common Council May lith. <br /> <br /> Recommitted. To report the cost of having a new topographical map of the City. <br /> We have reconsidered this matter with the City Engineer; he states positively that it <br />will require an appropriation ~f $1,500. to do the work properly; and it is, therefore, recom- <br />mended that such an appropriation be made for the work. <br /> <br /> communication from C. E. Grant in regard ~o filling purchased for property ~f <br />Grant. <br /> It is recommended that the petition be not granted. <br /> <br />the late <br /> <br /> A-petition of The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. to be allowed to construct a conduit <br />from the present manhole at High street and S. A. L. Ry. in location shown on attached copy of <br />drawing. <br /> It is recommended that the petition be granted, that said Company be required to give <br />a bond to amount of $~000. to secure the City against any suits for damages at this point or <br />any other location, and that the work.be done under the supervision of the City Engineer. <br /> <br /> A petition of the Sixth Ward~.Board to be authorized to proceed with work on Co~unty street, <br />at a cost of a~out $1,000; and ~lso to repair Glasgow street, if available funds are on hand <br />belonging to the Ward. <br /> It is recommended that the petition be gr~uted, the work to be done under the super- <br />vision arid to approval of the City Engineer. <br /> <br /> Question of working jail prisoners on the streets and to report om same with cost to the <br />City. Progress as to same. <br /> <br /> Attention called to the fact that pile drivers and cranes'used in the neighborhood of the <br />West Park View Bridge are likely to endanger the safety of the bridge. <br /> We report that the Clerk has been inst~acted to writ~ to the party in charge of pile <br />drivers and cranes near the West Park View Bridge and instruct him to tie pile drivers or cramps <br />neither to~nor along side of said bridge. <br /> <br />Authorized to use at once one-sixth of its appropriation allowed in the Budget. <br /> Ne repor~ that no action is necessary on this matter. <br /> <br />Referred by Board of Aldermen May 18th. <br /> <br /> Reeommitted.
