<br /> At' this point, the tales were suspended to hear from members of the School Boa~d, Superin-
<br />tendent, ~nd lady teachers of the Schools. who were present, in relation to an application of
<br />the School Board for ~n appropriation of $1,010o to pay increases in teachers' salaries for the
<br />months of September, October, November, and December, !917.
<br />
<br /> Whereupon, the application w~s res~l a~ud remarks were made favoring the ~ppropriation by
<br />the P~esident of the School Board, the Superintendent of Schools, Attorney F. L. Crocker, Eorm~n
<br />Hamilton, Dr. H. B. Gmrret~, ~ud Eis~ White.
<br />
<br /> Each member of the Council expressed himself me-fm~oring heartily-the appropriation and
<br />desired to provide the same, but some of them were doubtful ms to whether the amount could be
<br />raised mt this time.
<br />
<br /> Finally, on motion, the appropriation was referred to the Finance Department, with the
<br />express wish of the Council that the appropriation be recommended, if it can be done.

<br /> REPORTS OF DEPART~NF~TS
<br />
<br /> The Department of Law submitted the "Traffic Ordinance," with severe~l proposed ~mendments
<br />thereto, which had been recommitted February ?th,
<br />
<br /> After several Proposed amendments to ~$ub-section (O) of Section ~, Er. Eorg~umoved that
<br />said sub-section read as follows: "Any vehicle having a load projecting more than five feet
<br />beyon~ the body of such vehicle, or more than eight feet beyond the rear a~le of such vehicle,
<br />if such vehicle does not have a body, (such as lumber wagons, or similar~ vehicles), a red flag
<br />shall be displayed during the day, and m red lighted l~ntern ~t night. Such flag or l~ntern
<br />sh~ll be securely atts~ched to the extreme end of such projecting load, or pole of such vehicle."
<br /> The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Concerning Section 11, sub-section (~), Mr. Bunting m~ved that the examination of drivers
<br />of automobiles, ac., be put in the hands ~f the City ~mger. The motion was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Morris state~ that the matter of ~mount of bond to be required of.jitney drivers ,was
<br />not in the hands of hms Department, but he would recommend that same be maas $1,000.00, as pre-
<br />viously recommende~
<br /> Mr. Morgan ~oved t~at the amount of bond be made $250.00.

<br /> V~hereupon, the privilege of the fl~or was given ~o repreeenta~ives of the Jitney Associa-
<br />tion, ~nd ~ttorney Fcster F. V.~Staples spoke for the Association, saying that it is impossible
<br />for the jitney drivers to furnish bond.
<br />

<br /> On motion, sub-section (b) of Section ~ was amended so as ~o read as fol!pws: "All slow
<br />moving or he~vily loaded vehicles shall keep as close to the curb as practicable. A space of
<br />thirty feet at the curb on either side of a fire plug must be kept open and claar at all times,
<br />and it shall be°unlawful for a~y vehicle ~o stand or p~rk within ~ch distance of ~ fire plug
<br />at any time."
<br />
<br /> On motion, the recommended substitute for Section 7 was discussed s~ud adopted.
<br />
<br /> On motion, the section with regard to "No automobi~, taxi-cab, or Jitney-bus,::~for hire,
<br />shall be allowed to stand or park on the north side of Hmgh Street within ~enty-five (75)
<br />feet of the northwest intersection of High and Water Streets," was amended so as to read "within
<br />fifty (50) feet."
