Er. Bunting then moved that the privilege of the floor be given to Er. Walker, The motion was adopted. <br /> <br /> Er. Walker spoke. He said that he didn't desire re-instatement to the office of Chief <br />of the Fire Department, but-that he wanted to be vindicated before the public. He stated thmt <br />he would like to be represented through his attorney Judge ~illcox. <br />~hereupon, ~r. ~orris moved that the privilege of the floor be given Judge Willcox. <br />The motion was adopted. Judge ~iilcox took the floor, but said that he wms not exact- <br />ly in position to reply at this time to the ~anager's statements, n6t having kno~ before ~om- <br />i~o the meeting the oi~racter of the charges against ~r. ~alker. <br /> Then Er. Herbert moved that a special meeting be set for further hearing on the <br />subject. The motion was adopted. <br /> <br /> A report of the Auditor that he h~s in hs~d Water Com~lssion bills to amount of <br />~or which there is no appropriation, was re~erred to the Finance Depmrtment. <br /> <br /> A report of the Auditor that mn ~iditionml appropriation is needed fo~ "City Clerk & Coun- <br />cil Advertising~ w~e referred to the Finance Department. <br /> <br /> A communication was read from the Secretary of the League of Virginia Eunicip~lities <br />questing the Council to send delegates .to the meeting of ssdd League in Lynohburg September <br />18-1~-20th, a~d a bill for dues to said League to amount of $~0~00 w~s enclosed. <br /> On motion, the communication and bill were referred to the Department of Finance. <br /> <br /> An application of the City Clerk for.a leave of absence for thirty days~ beginning J~o_ue <br />*~h, was gr~nted. <br /> The resignation of Er. W, D. gorgon as a member of this body was rossi and was accepted. <br /> <br /> A commuz~ication from %he Harr£s Jewelry Company, of Norfolk, saying that said firm has <br /> been unable to ge~ m report from the High Constable ms to certain Judgments by their attorneys, <br /> was referred to the Department of Lmw. <br /> <br /> An invitation w~s received from the ~nageme~t-.and Employees of the Tidewatem Knitting <br /> gills to a~e~l a flag raising mt the gill Saturday, gay 2$th, ~t one o'clock P. E., and same <br /> w~s accepted with th~nks. <br /> <br /> The Chairman of the Public Property Department reported thmt the floor of the Chambers <br /> E~ine House w~s not in safe condition. He stated thmt $165. had been ~lowed in the Budget <br /> ~or the purchmse of an Illuminome~er amd thmt there w~s no use for s~id instrument at.this <br /> time. He therefore, moved that m.~,spec~l ~ppropriatlonof $165. be maple for the repair of <br /> the engine house floor. <br /> The motion was s~dopted by the following vote: <br /> Ayes--Bunting, Claud, Dmshieil, <br /> Hanvey, Herbert, Eorris, <br /> <br />The Chair suggestedthat ~ motion be made to inst~ct the City Clerk ~o write ~o She.City <br /> <br />Such a motion was m~de ~ud adopted. <br /> <br />The Chair suggested also that the Dep~rtment having chmrge of the Ga~der CreeX mat~er <br />should make a report on same, a~d on. motion, said Depmrtmsnt w~e re~uested to ms~ke ~ report <br /> the nex~ meeting of theCouncil. <br /> <br /> It was stated by the Chair that authority was needed to utilize certain rooms in the public <br />buildings for registration on June 5th, and on motion, authority wms gra~ted. <br /> <br /> Er~ Dashiell moved that a special meeting of the ~ounoit be h~id on F~day, ~ay 25th, <br />to consider the advisability of consolidating the offices of City Treasurer ~nd City Collector. <br /> The motion ~s mdopted. <br /> <br />On m~tion~ ~ijgurned. <br /> <br /> <br />
