<br />and requested that, when the committee of the Council takes up any of the complaints made
<br />against it at the recent meeting of committee, it De ~llowed to answer them and give its
<br />plan~tion of the same.
<br /> On motion, said copy of schedule of rates a~ communloation were referred to the
<br />Public Property Department.

<br />Herbert offered, the following resolution:
<br /> "Be it Reeolved~b~ The Council of the City of Ports-
<br />mouth, Virginia, That for the last thirty years or more the Oity hms always felt that the
<br />Volunteer Department was one of its mo~t vatuable mssets and
<br /> ta~t they looked upon same with
<br />m~great deal of pride and credit, and in view of the recent action tSken by them to discontinue
<br />active service after June
<br /> "Be it Resolved, That30th'
<br /> as members of the City Council, regret t?~t ~uch action was
<br />necessary to be t~ken and request that it will be the pleasure of the Volunteer Association
<br />'to continue in active service until August let,

<br /> On motio~, the City Attorney was instructed to do what may be necessary for protecting
<br />the r~ghte of t~e Cit~ of Portsmouth in the suit o~ the Cit~ of Norfolk for obtaining Lgkke
<br />Phillmps, &c., zrom the Portsmouth, Berkley & D~ffolk Water Company, when e~e comes up for

<br />by the following vote:

<br /> The Chair called the-attention of the committee appointed ~o handle the question of Port
<br />Warden Lines for ~der Creek to the necessity of taking some action with regard to same.
<br />
<br /> Er. Herbert stated that the watch box at the intersection of Wa~hihE+~or~treet and Race
<br />avenue needed raising and m tree at the intersection of s~id streets needed cutting down.
<br /> On me,ion, said matters m~ere referred to the City Manager and the Public Service
<br />Department with power to act,
