The Ferries Company submitted a copy of the schedule of rates in the lease of the ferries, and requested that, when the committee of the Council takes up any of the complaints made against it at the recent meeting of committee, it De ~llowed to answer them and give its plan~tion of the same. On motion, said copy of schedule of rates a~ communloation were referred to the Public Property Department. A oommu.uioation was res~i from the Portsmouth Volunteer Firemen's ~ssociation, accompanied by resolutions, notifying the Council that all o~ the fire co~panies will ~thdraw their ser- vices from~the ~$re D~artmen~ ~fttr midnight.Jun~ ~n mo~lo~, ~e-communication Was or~ere~ ~o ff£e an~ in connection with same, Herbert offered, the following resolution: "Be it Reeolved~b~ The Council of the City of Ports- mouth, Virginia, That for the last thirty years or more the Oity hms always felt that the Volunteer Department was one of its mo~t vatuable mssets and ta~t they looked upon same with m~great deal of pride and credit, and in view of the recent action tSken by them to discontinue active service after June "Be it Resolved, That30th' as members of the City Council, regret t?~t ~uch action was necessary to be t~ken and request that it will be the pleasure of the Volunteer Association 'to continue in active service until August let, On motion of ~r. On motio~, the City Attorney was instructed to do what may be necessary for protecting the r~ghte of t~e Cit~ of Portsmouth in the suit o~ the Cit~ of Norfolk for obtaining Lgkke Phillmps, &c., zrom the Portsmouth, Berkley & D~ffolk Water Company, when e~e comes up for He~ring. Er. Bunting presented the following resolution~ which was ~dopted: "Resolved, That the Clerk be d~r~cted to forward to the Game Commissioner of Vmr~mnia, Honorable John S. Peer sons, Horfolk, Va,, the name of Nr. James F~ Pablo,& duly qu&lified voter, to be added to a list heretofore sent of other persons deemed suitable for appointment to the position of Game Warden of the ~mty of Portsmouth," ~. D. morgan as a member of the City Council. Adopted. Then Mr. Claud nominated Er. W. H. The Chair called the-attention of the committee appointed ~o handle the question of Port Warden Lines for ~der Creek to the necessity of taking some action with regard to same. Er. Herbert stated that the watch box at the intersection of Wa~hihE+~or~treet and Race avenue needed raising and m tree at the intersection of s~id streets needed cutting down. On me,ion, said matters m~ere referred to the City Manager and the Public Service Department with power to act, Er. Herbert called attention to the some discussion a~ose as mo same. Finally, the Clerk was instructed to & Po~om~o Telephone Co~oany and request:him to telephone service in the City at present, and .~rite to the District manager of the Chesapeake see that the telephone service i$ sade better.
