<br /> On motion of Mr. Herbert, each of the applicants was give.'the privilege of the ~loor for
<br />ten minutes to ex~ress his views about the City Managership, all of the other a~plicants to be
<br />ox~ of, the Chamber ~lle an mpplicant was spea~Ing. Each applicant ~m~s questioned also by the

<br /> Mm. Norris objected specially to Mr. Bates, giving several reasons ~V his objections,
<br />but objected also toall of ~he applicants, as he did. not thi~k any o~ them qualified for the
<br />position. He did not think sufficient publicity h~d been given the matter in order to obtain
<br />t~e:~ight man. . ~

<br />Then the election was gone into with the following results:

<br /> M~. N. B. Bates received the votes of T. A. Bunting, N. P. Claud, C. H. Herbert, and J. T.
<br />Hanvey$-Mr. P~ E. Looney, W. H. Oalpepper; T. B. Shertzer, ~scie Dashtetl~ Jno. A. Norris.

<br />~hereupon, the Chair declared W. B. Bates elected to the position.
<br />
<br /> And on motion, it was determined to employ Mr. Bates for a period of tkr~e years giving
<br />him a sala~y of $$,000. for the first yea~, $$,500. for the second yemr, and $5,~00. for the
<br />third year~ as requested by him in his application for the City Managership.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Morris, by common consent, =earl mn ~oplicatton of the Civil & Police Justice for a
<br />thirty d~ys' leave of absence., and he moved that the request be g~nted.
<br /> Th~ motion was s~iopted.
<br />
<br />Mr. Bates was then called in and told of his election.
<br />
<br />Re thanked the Council and premised a faithful attention to the duties of the office.
