<br /> The City N~nager brought up the question of the size of signs required for "jitneys" in
<br /> the City.
<br /> On motion, the privilege of the floor w~s granted to the jitney drivers present who
<br />might desire to speak with re.rd to same, and several of them spoke objecting to the size
<br />of the signs required by the City.
<br /> After some discussion,~on motion of Mr~ Morris,-the si~gns were allowed ~o be out in
<br />ha~l~ and the word "licenses iezt 'off, ancl the Department of Law w~s instructed to bring in
<br />~u amendment to the "Traffic Ordinance. covering same.
<br />
<br /> Mr~ Morris presented the following resolution, which w~s adopted:
<br /> "Whereas, The w~ter
<br />contract with the Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Co. will e~ire next April, 191~, and,
<br />
<br /> "Whereas, It is absolutely necessary that the City of Portsmouth determine very soon wh~t
<br />sSeps ~t must take to protect it$~interest,
<br />
<br /> "Therefore, Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, That the Water Com-
<br />mission be requested to make a written statement, or appear before the City Council, at its
<br />next meeting, Tuesdmy, August 21st, aUd state whether or not they have abandoned the plan to
<br />build a water system fo~ the City cf Portsmouth, ~nd if sc, whether they ~avor a new con~ra~t
<br />with the Portsmouth, Berkley & Suffolk Water Co, b~sed upon reasonable rates and a s~isf&ctory
<br />contract, or whether they favor the City buying the property of the Portsmouth, Berkley
<br />folk Water Co. at a price to be determined by a true valuation cf the property, as found by
<br />an expert or experts employed for that purpose."

<br /> Mr. Morris stated that the Traffic Ordinance is being flagrantly violated, to such mn ex-
<br />tent as to endanger the lives of our citizenS, and he moved that the City Manager be inst~ct-
<br />ed~to have said ordinance rigidly enforced. The motion w~s a~opted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Herbert moved that a gmte be placed in the west wall of Oak Grove Cemetery, s~ud same
<br />was referred to the City Man.get to consider the a~lvisabili~y ~nd ascertain the cost.

<br /> The City Manager called attention to the ordinance ~onoerning She p~l~t.l~g of poles, and
<br />the privilege of the fl~or was granSed to M~ssrs. Eaton and Palmer of the Virginia Radlw~y &
<br />Power Co., who sSa~ed that the poles could not be repainted without scraping and thought tin
<br />shields around the bottom of the poles would answer.
<br /> On me,ion, the City M~nager w~s instructed to see that the c~rdinance,as adopted, is
<br />carried dut.
