SeDtember 9, 1919 streets and sidewalks be paved: paving Godwin street, f~om'Glasgow ta High, including sidewalks; paving of sidewalks on Godwin street, f~om High to So~bh, down South to 'Elm avenue; paving walE- way of High street, from Pearl t.o Ninth avenue; paving of Leck~ie street, ' from Cooke to Webster~ and down Webster 'to Ann; and pavzng of V~ythe street, from First to ~0~t. On motion, the recommendation was referred to the Department of. Finance and City Mai~ger, The Chairman o~ t~he Department of Public Service reco~w~ended also that the City ~ger have Chestnut_ street oiled between the Old Shell Road and Old Deep Creek Road. On motion, said recommendation was referred to the Finance Dep~rtment- and the Cit~ Manager. The P~esident of the Council called attention to the fact that the lights in the City ~arket and City'Market Shed and on the street betwee~ the two have never been cha~ged from the old are lights to 400 candle power incandescent light~s, as per agreement between the City and Va. Ry. & Power Co,; and s~me was referred to the City Mar~ger. '~. Culpepper. p~esented a communication from the City Manager asking for an appropriation of $37~.00 to purchase a fou~ horse road machine and road plow; and same was referred to the Finance Department. Hanvey, C. H. Herbert, E. H. rzght, Also the City Manager. The minutes of the regular meeting September 9th were read and were approved. REPORTS DEPARTMENTS No report Public Service-- Referred September 9th A request of the City Manager that an appropriation of $2,300. be made for'c~ttingwee~s and filling and draining dirt streets for the balance of the year. It is recommended that a special appropriation~ of $1,500. be allowed for same. Recorm~endation of the City ~aD~ger that an appropriation of $490. be allowed to purchase two horses; also b~ and harness for the Superintendent of the Streets. It is recommended that a special appropriation be allowed to purchase the items named. A contract w~th H. H. ~u, Inc., for construction df the concrete road from Sixth avenue to the new City limits on the extension of County street, or what is known as "Hedges Ferry Road." It is recommended that said contract be approved by the Council. Recommendation of the City Manager that an appropriation of $125. be made to cover the of a mowing machine. It is recommended that an appropriation to said amount be made for the p~-~pose. cost A co~icationfrom the City Manager advising that he has appointed inspectors for the street improvement~, out of the appropriation already made for such i~pr0vements. it is recommended that the City ~anager be instructed to advise with the Departments of Public Service and Finance as to the appointment of such inspectors. A communication from the~City Manager oonoe~ing request f~om the Chief Engineer, S. A. L. Ry., for extension until April, 1920, of privilege for relaying~one of its tracks across High street· Progress. A co~unication ~f~.om the City ~uager, attac~zir~ c~py of his letter to the Superintendent of Streets notifying hi~ that the payrolls for his Departments must not exceed $800~ per week until extr~a provision is made for the maintenance.
