February 8, 1921 <br /> <br /> A communication was read from George H.. Cless, Jr., for The Yomarco Guild, assoQiated <br />with the First Congregational Church of Portsmouth, stating that said Guild believes in law <br />enforcement; also that it believes in the City Council and has unanimously authorized him to <br />express its appreciation of the Council's sincere and effective~fforts to enforce law and to <br />pledge its support to the Council in thi~ presen~ and par~icular~vital campaign. The Guild <br />offered its services to the Council. <br /> On motion, the Clerk was instructed to thank the Guild for the gxpressions contained <br />in their communi~ation and to say that When the opportunity presents itself they will be glad <br />to avail themselves of their offer of service. <br /> <br /> A communication was read from the School Board giving additional information with regard <br />to lots adjoining the Woodrow Wilson High School, which the School Beard desires to purchase. <br /> On motion, s~me was referred to the Finance Committee. <br /> <br /> A petition was read from certain residents of Naval Place that one of the conditions for <br />remewal,of franchise of Portsmouth Gas Co. be the laying of a gas main on Naval Place from <br />Fifth St. to the 8ilmerton car line. <br /> On motion,~-the petition was referred to the City Nanager. <br /> <br /> A notice from the Clerk of the Board of Review of certain corrections of errors in the <br />L~nd Bo~k of 1920 of the City of Portsmouth, as returned by John C. Niemeyer, Commissioner of <br />the Revenue, within 60~l~ys ~m the date%~ereof. <br /> On motion, the notice was referred to the Finance Committee. <br /> <br /> Mr. Brooks, Chmirman of the Telephone Committee,stated that the Chesapeake & Potomac Tele- <br />phone Co. has evaded the issue ef automatic phones of the City of Portsmouth and that the City <br />Attorney will carry out the original instruction of the Council to proceed in Court to compel <br />the said Company to establish mutomatic phones in the City ~f PortsmOuth under its contract <br />with the City. <br /> <br /> On motion of ~r. White, the City Atto~n~ywas <br />corning the leas~ ef the several street en~s~ the <br />o~zncelling the leases. <br /> <br />instructed to investigate and repor~ con- <br />legality of leases, and the City's right for <br /> <br /> Mr. Hu~chins called attention to the fao~ that ~hree deaths had resulted in'one week from <br />automobile accidents, and moved that the Cit2 N~mg~ be re~u~ste~ to oonside= more stringent <br />regulations g0ve~ning speed of automobiles.
