<br /> Whereupon, the License Tax Ordinance for the Year beginning May 1st, which had been
<br />placed on its first reading by Council March 28th, was taken up and read:

<br /> Mr. Nhite moved that the f611oWing section be inserted in regard tO
<br />in place of the section recommended:
<br /> '"Each detective agency, or individual detective, or any
<br />agency or person making a business of furnishing watchmen for compensation, resident or non-
<br />resident, $~6. OO. Provided, however, that before a license is issued to a detective agency,
<br />or to mny mgency or person employing or furnishing watchmen for compensation, or ~o a detective
<br />or watchman, a certificate shall be obtained from the City Mmnager of the City of Portsmouth
<br />ms to the Sitness of the applicant. Not pro-rated."

<br /> The motion was adopted.

<br />"Detective Agencies,"
<br />
<br /> Mr~ White offered, the following addition ~o the section on "Amusements:" "Provided, how-
<br />ever, t~ab before a license is issued for any of the above amusement, a certificate shall be
<br />obtained from the City ~nager as to the fitness o~ the applicant and the desirability of the
<br />place or location mtWhioh the amusements are mo be conducted, and no certificate shall be issued
<br />to mny person who has been convicted within twelve months for a violation of the liquor laws,
<br />or for any place in which liquor has been ~ound within tw~ve months."

<br />The amendment .was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. White moved also to add the followin~ ~o section on "Architects, Surveyors, and Engi-
<br />neers:" "Said license shall be paid before building permit is issued." ~dopted.

<br /> With.regard to Electrical Construction, Mr. White moved that the privilege of the floor.
<br />be granted ~o a committee of electrical con,rasters who are interested in this section.
<br /> Mr. W. E, Carte~spoke and urged the mdoption of the recommended section.

<br /> With regard ~o the section on gmrages, which places a tax on ~arages ron~ed or let for
<br />storage of automobiles, &c., m petition was remd from W. F. Robertson and others msking that
<br />Council stiminmte the tax on owners who ren~ building ~o p~rties who use them for the storage
<br />of private automobiles.
<br /> ~hen Mr. Lorenzo Cart spoke in opposition ~o the section as recommended.
<br /> Then Mr. White moved that the 3rd p~rjs~graph under h~ading "Garages," which places a taxx
<br />on garages rented or let for stor'mge of mutomob~les, &c., be eliminated.
<br /> 'The motion was adopted, by the~ollowing vote:

<br /> Under the heading "Plumbing," Mr. White moved thmt the section as recommended be eliminated
