<br />sible among the following banks of the City of Port~mouth: The First Nationml Bank, the Bank of
<br />Tidewater, the Merchants & .F~rmers Bank, the American N~tion~l B~nk, The Citizens Trust Co., amd
<br />The State B~nk. Provided, however, that current funds ~ubject to checking mmy be kept in one
<br />bs~ as at present with the understanding that the checking balance shall be kept at as low a'
<br />figure as possible, generally not exceeding $2,500.00."

<br /> The following extract wa~ read from meeting of the Board of Supervisors of Norfolk County
<br />held on the l~th dmy of August, 1~3: ~The Ohairman appointed M~v. R~pelye, lit. Duke, and M~.
<br />Old, together with M~. Preston, ex-officio, a Committee to cgnfer with the City Oo~nCil of the
<br />City of Portsmouth to hasten the construction of Route $1~X (now known as $40), and to have
<br />the Sta~e Highway Commission build the said Route with the assistance of the City of Portsmouth
<br />as soon as possible."
<br /> M~. White moved that a Committee of Three, together with the City Manager, be appointed
<br />to confer with the Committee from the Board of ~upefvisors,and report on the advisability of
<br />e::pediting the ~mmecLiate building of this road. The motion was adopted.
<br /> The President appointed Messrs. Brooks, White, and R.E.B. Stewart to ;said Committee.

<br />On motion of Mm. Brooks, the ordinance was placed on its first reading.

<br /> End. Submitted report showing the cost of operation of the Portemouth~Water Department
<br />for the month of June, 1923.
<br /> On motion, the report was ordered to be filed.

<br /> 3xd. "I beg to submit herewith report from the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce on adver-
<br />tising. I believe that this report is of the greatest importance and that ~he~ Council should
<br />co-operate in advertising the City, A special appropriation of $2,0OO.OO is recommended for
<br />thispurpose with the understanding that the .money will be expended by the Ctty Na~ager for:
<br />ist, printing a pamphlet covering the adv~ntmges and resources of Portsmouth; 2nd, covering
<br />the cost of much advertising !n business papers as approved by the City N~nager, !t m~y be
<br />~neoeesary also to pay certain items of travelling expense in connection with locating industries
<br /> which m my be approved by the City N~n~ger. The Chamber of Commerce will be requested to furnish
<br /> a detailed budget showing hew it is proposed to expend the fUnds.-
<br /> On motion of Mr. Oast, the recommended appropriation was referred to the Finance
<br /> mitres.
