March ii, 1924 <br /> <br />To: <br /> <br />The School Board of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Va, <br /> <br />1, It is requested tt~t the school system of Truxtunbe ts~en over from ~Febru~ry l, 1924, <br />and run by the City School Beard, for the following reasons. <br /> <br />(a) ~hm% we a~e now a: part. of~ the city, of Pcrt~.euth rather than a Government Reserva- <br /> tion. <br /> <br />The present system is and has been run by funds collected mostiyby free will of- <br />ferings, together with some assistance received ~om the State, both of ~hichhave <br />proved to be ~irely insufficient for the ~ain~ensmce of the school. <br /> <br />2, It is s~lsorequested that the present T~ac~ers be appointed temporar~ by Portsmouth <br />City School Board te serve for the re~,r~inder ef the schosl t~rm. <br /> <br />(si ne ) <br /> <br />T~e~s Tuo~e~ Pre~. <br />Q. I~ssiter, Sec. <br /> <br />The fqlle~ing comsmiuication was read 'from a Committee representing the citizens of Truxtun: <br /> <br />"TY~xtu$-Perts~outh, Va, <br />11 l.~rch 1924.; <br /> <br />To the 0ouncil of the City of Portsmouth and <br />T~ose to whom these presents m~y come. <br /> <br />Greetings: <br /> <br /> ~e, the citizens of T~xtun, t~_r~ the umdersigne~ co~mi~ttee~ beg leave te registe~ <br />an appeal with you to render such assistance as may be inycur power to devise some means whe~e- <br />by the City ef Portsmouth can assume the responsibility of the oper~tien-~of the public utilities <br />~f the p~oject until such time as the assumption of the same shall be duly aud regularly effect- <br />ed. <br /> <br /> ~ In registering this appeal, we express a wi!limpness to become taxable immediately. <br /> It is thought-that' thr~ this source revenue could be sectored, and ~e same would offset,' to ~e <br />degree, the !~bilit~ incurred th~ the taking over ef the above mentioned utilities. ~ <br /> <br /> At this time the public funds in hand are not sufficient to guarante~ the mainte- <br />nance of our Utiltt~ez, ~ud the sutlook for the future premise~ drastic consequence, ~m~ess <br />immediate financimt aidis secured.
