On motion, the recomendatien was referred to the Finance Committee. 9th. "I am attaching hereto a letter from Dr~ Thcs. H. Reed, Director of the ~ureau of Government of the University of ~ichigan. I would De glad to utilize two ef the young gentlemen referred~ to by Dr. Reed and would s~ggest that the Counci~l~uthorize me to employ the~ from June 15th to September 1st, at a salary ef $7§.00 each. "I-$~ ~clssing herewith copies of orders of the State Corporation Commission, d~ted June 6th, in the matter of the applications of the Virginia P~iiw~y & Power Co. relative to discontinuance m~d suspension of certain lines in the City of Portsmouth. These orders a~e briefly as follows: The first refers to the petition £or pe~ission to discontinue the Navy Yard-and to abandon the use of track on Lincoln St. between the main gate amd Fourth St. The second asks for permission to suspend the operation of cars on the Port Nsf- folk and Pinners Point line, north ef t~e car barmy; te discontimne the operation of street c~ms on the Park View and Cemetery line~ amd to abandon the use of the track ce~encing at the intersection ef An~e and H~tton Sts., thence along Anne St. to Elm Ave~,'thend~-along Elm Ave. to Glasgow St~, thence along Glasgow St. to Godwin St.~ ~.~a fi~mlly~ to operate a service consisting of 'Birney Safety Cars' ena seven s~d a h~lfm.tuute l~se headway be- tween the ferry loop amd the car barns.
