March 23, 1926 appr~. At a regularmeeting of the 0ity Oou~cil Ma~ch 23rd therewere present: Messrs-- Vernon Brooks, E.W. M~upin, Jr., J. Alden Oast, J. C. Smith, L. G. White, 5- Also the City Man~er.~ The Finance-- minutes of the regular meeting March 9th were read and were approved. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES Referred Ma~ch 9th Recommendation of the Manager that an appropriation of $~0.00 be allowed for a fire hydrant at the intersection of Cleveland and Maryland avenues, on the southeast ~orner, the Superin- tendent of the Water Department concurring in the recommendation, the cost for installation to the Water Department It is recommended that a special appropriation of $30.00 be allowed for this hydrant; l~26. Reports of the. City 0ollector~ City~ ~Trea~urer' and 0ity Auditor for the month of February~ We have exsmined said reports and it is recommended that they be filed. Request of the 0ity Collector that his office be refunded $12.38 made in error on.l~25 tax ticket on November l~, 1~25. Progress as to same. (And City Attorney) Order of 0curt relieving E!izab~th A. 0hristensen from payment of taxes assessed in the name of Thomas J. Lawless on property 136-138 Henry St., formerly known as 69 N. Henry St., for the Yea~s l~O~, 1~0~, and 1910, the said Thomas J. Lawless having owned a life estate in said property in said Years. Progress. (And 0ity Attorney) Order of 0curt to ~e~nd Paul B. Oodd the sum of $73-~5 City T~xes paid i~ error for 1925 on property 688, ,Pt. ~87 W. Broad St., as assessment of $3213.38 belongs to the owner of the land adjoining the land of Paul B. Codd on the south. Progress. (And 0ity Attorney) Petition of Paul B. Oodd. by 0assell & Oassell, attorneys, that he be refunded $~9.10 on 1~22 taxes and $49.!O on 192~ taxes paid in error. Progress. And it is further recommended that the Treasurer. be authorized to-pay, out of funds on h~nd from collection of Dog Taxes, bill of J. Shirley Hope, State Game Warden, to amount of $6~.50, for services rendered in destroying 25 tagless dogs $ $2.50 each. (Sig~ed) Vernqn Brooks, Ohairman. Gentlemen:J- We have receive~ a bid from the Sinking Fund Commission for the pttrc~ase of $65,000.00 Portsmouth, Va., ~ 1/~% Redemption Bonds due~93t-1~55, at par and aocz-~ed mnterest~ We recommend that the saia bid be apcepted. We have also received a communication from the ~inking Fund Commission in which they offer to ta~e up and cancel $2400.00 0ity bf 'Portsmouth bounds due this year. On motion of Mr. Brooks, the report was adopted, and by the following vote: Ayes-- Brooks, Maupin, Oast, Smith, White, 5- UNFINISHED BUSINESS Mr. Brooks moved-that we go into election Of members of the School Board whose term will expire April l, 1926, the following terms expiring: First District, T.W. Mathews; Second District, H. A. Blakenship; Third District, Albert Lassiter. The motion was adopted, and Mr. Brooks nominated T.~W. Mathews ~s a member from the First District. There being no other nomination~ he was elected, and by the following vote: Ayes-- Brooks, Mr. Brooks nominated H. bei~ no other nominations, Ayes~ Brooks, Mr. Brooks nominated Albert Lassiter as a member from the Third District, and no other nomiu~tions, he w~s elected, ~ud by the following vote: Ayes-- Brooks, Maupin, Oast, Smith, White, 5.
