After~ the receipt'of the above letter $1,000 in addition to'the $3750 previously p.aid~was
paid to each Assessor, and- the sum of $2~%) retained from each Out of the $5,O00 approprmatmon.
The Council has never had the cards made, ;but has kept. the $500 in the City-treasury.

It is frae that %he-Assessors.defended the eases brought to 'court for a. reduction of the
assessment, and imfo~med themselves as to the condition of the prepex~y-i~vetved in the pro-
oeeding, and ms~e very good witnesses. However, the City Manager sta~es h~ ma~e no promise
to the Assessors that the balance of $250 would be paid them. Ne was not City Nansger at
the time %he settlement was made, and the only thing he remembers stating to Mr. Markham
was his p~rsOnal views upon the subject. The Assessors in their original 6ontract agreed
to defend the assessment, and there i~ no legal obligation on the part of the City to pay
the $250. It is a matter which has been handled by the City Council, amd it is largely a
matter with the Coumoilmen as to whether they think under the circumstances the Assessors
should be paid the $250.

Respectfully submitted,
