J. Whitmore <br /> be dismissed from the Police force for the good of the Department, effective July-12th,1928.# <br /> On motion, the notice was ordered to be filed. <br /> <br /> _iad: '#This is to notify you of the appointment of S. J. Allen as Supervisor under..the <br />City Engineer, at a salary of $150.00 per month, effective July 1st, 1928, and also of the <br />appointment of W. H. ~alpepoer as stableman at $4.33 1/3 per day, effective JUly 2nd, 1928. <br />Both appointments are for a probationary period of sixty days.u <br /> On motion, the notice, was ordered to be filed. <br /> <br /> 3rd. The alley at present is unused and it will <br />probably remain so far years. I de net feel that the turn in the alley at this point would <br />work a hardship on anyone, I therefore recommend that the Council grant the petition and <br />that the City Attorney be asked to bring in the proper resolution when the SOuthern Residence <br />Oorporation is prepsmed to furnish a deed ~o the adjoining property." <br /> <br /> -Mr. M~upin moved that the-recommendation of the Manager be adopted, provided all owners <br />on both side~ of the changed portion of the alley give their consent to the change. <br /> The motion was admpted, and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes-- Brooks, Dmnford, Maupin, Mayo, Oas,t, Stewart, <br /> <br /> UNFINISHED BUSINESS <br /> The following report was read from the 0ity Attorney: <br /> <br />Honorable Ci~ Council, <br />Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />Gentlemen:-- <br /> <br />"Portsmouth, Va., <br /> <br />J%tty 23, 1~28. <br /> <br /> At your meeting on June lZ, 1~28, you referred to the 0ity Manager and the 0ity <br />Attorney a communication to the following effect: <br /> <br />Honorable. T. Olau~ <br /> 0. N. Markham., <br /> Upon investigation of this matter it is found that Messrs. W. T. 0laud and O, N. <br />Markham were appointed on October 16, 1924, by the Court of Hustings for the City of Ports- <br />mouth, as the Asseasors to make the cfai~uinneal assessment of lands for the City. The <br />Council then agreed to allow the a~sessors more compensation than that allowed by State law, <br />and the following letter was written by General J. p. ~ervey, then City Manager, namely: <br /> <br /> "December 29, 1924. <br />Mr. C. N. Markham, PortSmouth, Va. <br />Mr. W. T. Claud, Portsmouth, Va. <br /> <br />Dear Sirs: <br /> The Oouncil has authorized a total compensation for each assessor of $5,000.00. <br /> <br /> <br />
