May 28, 1929 At a =eguls~r meeting of the Oity Oouncil held May 28th there were present: Messrm-- Vernon Brooks, J. 0. D~ford1, E. W. M~upin, Jr., Arthur.Mayo, j., Alden Cast, J. R. Stewart, Archibald Ogg, ?. Also the 0ity ~anager. 7ice-President j. R. Stewart in the 0hair. The minutes of the regular meetings April 23rd and Nay 14th, and joint meeting with the Norfolk Oounty Supervisors May 22nd were read and were approved. Mr. Mayo moved that the following ordinance be taken out of its regular order and consider- ed at this time: Au Ordinance Making it Unlawful to Allow Auy Railroad Oar to Stand on Oraw- ford' Street, between High and King Streets, for a Longer Period than 12 Hours, The motion was adopted. Mr. Ogg moved that the privilege of the floor be granted to any one who may desire to speak on the ordinance. The motion was adopted, and Mr.. R. H. Baghy spoke for the petitioners in favor of the ordinance. Mr. H. A. Brinkley spoke for the S. A. L. Railway 0o. opposing the ordinance. Mr. T. E. Gilman, representing the Russo Bros., spoke opposing the ordinance. Mr. Brooks moved that the ordinance be ~aid on the table until the next regular meeting. The motion wu lost'& b~ the following vote: Ayes-- Brooks, Maupin, Nays~ Dunford, Mayo, Oast, Stewart, Ogg, Then Mr. Brooks moved that the ordinance be a~opted, and the motion was lost. by the follow- lng vote'~ Ayes-- None. Nays-- Brooks, Dunford, Maupin, M~yo,. Cast, Stewart, Ogg, ?. The following oomm~Anioations were read from the Oity Manager: 1st. #I have this date approved the recommendation of the 0hief of the Fire Department in the following matters: Dismissal of W. G. Hartung, ho$eman grade ,A~a salary $4.95 per day, effective o'clock 'A. M. this date, for the good of the department. Appointment of L.. J. R-ipley as hoseman Grade ~B' at a salary of $4.15 per day for a probat- lonary period of one year, to fill this vacancy., On motion, the notice was ordered to be filed. 3rd. "We have approximately $11~OO0.00 balance in the Ninth Ward Bond Fund and the resi- dents of the Harrison Ward are very anxious that we make certain improvements in various sectionst of the ward. Inasmuch ~tJaat. the money is available, if possible, this work should be done this spring, I recommend the attached program at an estimated cost of~$8,536.47 for your approval: "The following estimates cover construction of sidewalks in various loc~tions in ~he Ninth walk:WSzed' All of these estimates anticipate a four foot width of a five inch monolithic concrete West Side Richmond Ave.- Duke to Jefferson- approximately 2044 ft. long.
