Walke Truxtun,
~ember State Highway 0ommission,
Norfolk, Va.

Dear Sir~
The Council of the Oity cf Portsmouth, in special session assembled, September
25, 1930, at 8:00 P. M., unanimously request your Hohorabte Body to continue in a straight
lmne the ro osed road from Magnolia to Portsmouth, at its ~un~ture w?n the present Suffolk
~i., ~ P -P ..... ~-~-.~ terminat~n~ at or nea~ t~e i~erse~tion off High St. and
~oulevaru~ a~ or'~oo~ ~.~.~m ~, ~
Hamilton Ave. within the 0ity llmits of Portsmouth.
Ne a~e in full accord with the resolution passed September 25th, 1930, by a
joint committee of the 0ouncil of the Oity of Portsmouth, Board of Supervisors of Norfolk
_County and the 0hamber of Commerce (copy of which is attached).
The continuation of this road in a straight line would tend to throw the combined
traffic of the present Suffolk Boulevard and the proposed New F~ad into a well lighted and
paved sixty foo~ roa~lway within the city limits r~ther tha~ into a thirty-six foot' roadway,
which now ts~es oa~e of the present Suffolk Boulevard traffic.
We feel that with such an a~rangement the Oity of Portsmouth could Safer and
more expeditiously handle the traffic coming into the city f~om these two roads. The State
could, in all probability eliminate the cost of placing shoulders on the present Suffolk
Boulevard from Alexander's to Hamilton Ave. at the city limits.

truly yours,

(Signed) L.O. Brinson, 0ity 01erk.

"WiIEREAS, the joint highway committee consisting of committees of the Portsmouth 0ity
Council, the Board of ~pervisors of Norfolk Ocunt~ and the ~o~tsmouth 0hamber of 0ommerce~
Inc., has been interested in ~ssisting the State Highway 0om~ission in securing necessary
rights of way for necessary improvements to the portsmouth-Suffolk road, Route 10, and
WHEREAS, this committee is convinced of the immediate necessity for relief of conditions
on this road between Portsmouth city and Driver station, this need being ps~ramount to need
for improvement of other sections of the same road, and

WHEREAS, some difficulty has.arisen in ~ecuring rmghts
line and Alexander's corner because of the close development
therefore,

of way between Portsmouth City
of property in this section, now

BE IT RESOLVED, 'by the joint roads committee, that the Highway 0ommission be asked, if
rights of way a~ve not immediately a~ilable .fo~ beginning of. construction at the Poz~amouth
Oity line, to begin constxuction instead at Alexander's corner and proceed westward; or, if,
after d~ligence ha~ been show~ in efforts to seottre needed rights of way in the section be-
tween Alexander~a corner and the Norfolk-Nansemond county line, this right of way is stilI not
immediately available, const~otion be begun at Driver station and continued eastward toward
Portsmouth pending completion of the right-of-way."

On motion, ad~ottrned.
