May 2~th, 1932~ <br /> <br />Ayes - Brooks, Hutohins, Maupin, Mayo, Ogg, O~st, Stewa~-t - <br /> <br />Nays - None. <br /> <br />The following letter from the Oity~ Attorney. was read: <br /> <br /> "At your last meeting you referred to me an order of the Court reducing the <br />assessment of the property o£ Stephen E. Selby. I appeared and defended the petition <br />upon the hearing in the oou~t and it developed that the assessors had placed lower values <br />on the land~ than that recorded by the clerks upon the Land Book. The error occurred in <br />copying the old values from cards instead of the new values placed upon the map by the <br />assessors. 0onsequently! the~ourt ordered the reduction and the Oity must abide by th~ <br />Order. Mr. Selby ~hould ce rezanded the amounts set forth in the cottrt order and shoul~ be <br />exonerated from the pa~uent of like amounts on his taxes in'l~32.. ~ - .... ~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Maupin to concur in the City Attorney's recommendation and. appro- <br />priate $94~9 to make said refund, was adopted. <br /> <br />The follOW~Yng letter from the Oity Attorney was read: <br /> <br /> "At your last meeting you referred to me the petition of the Trustees of St. <br />Paul's A~ican Methodist Episcopal Ohuroh asking fo~ the relief of taxes for the years <br />1922 to 1932, inclusive, amounting to $87.42 on two lots, n~mbers 23 and 24 in Block 4~ on <br />the plan of Brighton. <br /> Sub-Section B of Section 183 of the State. Oonstitution provides that the fol- <br />lowing proR~rty shall be exempt from taxation, state a~d local. <br /> <br />~Buiidings with land they actually occupy, and the f~mrniture and <br />furnishings therein and endowment funds lawfully owned and held <br />by churches or religious bodies, and~wholly and exclusively used <br />for religious worsh~o, or for the residence of the minister of <br />any such ohttvoh or religious body, together w~h the additional <br />adjacent land ~easonably necessary for the convenient use of any <br />such buildLug." <br /> <br /> Those two lots ~om which the Trustees are asking zo be relieved of taxes ad- <br />join the church building located on lot ~22 at the corner of 0hestnut and Maupin Streets. <br />The land in question is u~ed by the church in connection with their building and is held <br />as a church yard and for zuture expansion. No revenue is derived from the property. I be- <br />lieve, under the circumstances, that the prayer of the petition should be granted and the <br />taxes~should be relieved." <br /> Motion of ~M. 0gg to oonoum in the 0ity Attorney's recommendation-, was adopted. <br /> <br /> Daily report of the Accounting Department for May 23rd was received and ordered <br />filed. <br /> <br />- NEW BUSI~ESS - <br /> <br /> Petition ffrom pinnors Point 0~vio League that the Council take some action to <br />eradicate mosquitoes in that section was referred to the 0ity Manager. <br /> <br /> Report of J.A.D.
