Fox, same was adopted and by the following vote: Ayes - Brooks, Fox, Hutchins, Nayo, Noore, Oast, Ogg - ?. Nays - None. - NE~ BUSINESS - Order of Oourt relieving Progressive Realty ~rporation of certain taxes for the years 1931 and 1932 was on motion referred to the Oity Attorney. Order of Oourt relieving the parrish O~mpany, Inc. of certain taxes for the years 1931 and 1932, was on motion referred to the Oity Attorney. The folloWing petition was read: "To the Honorable Nembers of the Oity Oouncil, Of the City of portsmouth, Virginia: Sirs: The undersigned~ who are engaged in the mercantile business in the Oity of Portsmouth, Virginia, respectfully~petition your Honorable Body for relief from the excessive and burdensome license tax which, is required to be paid in_order to engage in a small retail~ocery business. At the present time we are forced to pay for seven sets of licenses to-wit: Nerchants License from the State of Virginia: Tobacco License from the State of Virgimia, Nerehants' License from the O~ty of portsmouth, Tobacco License f~om the ~i~y of Portsmouth, Soft Drink License f=om the City of PO=ts- mouth, Nilk License for the Gity of portsmouth, and ~eat License f=om the Oity of Portsmouth. There is ~o~o~her business in this city, or in the State of Virginia, that reGui~es as many license to conduct a small business as is quired~of us in this Oity. we there fore, earnestly appeal ~o your Body for relief in the coming yea~o (Sig~ed) Bonnie Oaplan, and sundry others." and on motion of Er. ~ayo referred to the Oity Nanager to be taken up w~th the License Tax Ordinance. The repo~t of Fred F. Ames for auditing the books and accounts of the Portsmouth- Norfolk Oounty ferries, was received and ordered filed. ~rivilege of the floor was granted to Er. ncr of destroying tagless dogs, and on motion of Nanager.
