Fox, same was adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes - Brooks, Fox, Hutchins, Nayo, Noore, Oast, Ogg - ?. <br /> <br />Nays - None. <br /> <br /> - NE~ BUSINESS - <br /> <br /> Order of Oourt relieving Progressive Realty ~rporation of certain taxes for <br />the years 1931 and 1932 was on motion referred to the Oity Attorney. <br /> <br /> Order of Oourt relieving the parrish O~mpany, Inc. of certain taxes for the years <br />1931 and 1932, was on motion referred to the Oity Attorney. <br /> <br />The folloWing petition was read: <br /> <br />"To the Honorable Nembers of the Oity Oouncil, <br /> Of the City of portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br />Sirs: <br /> The undersigned~ who are engaged in the mercantile business in the <br />Oity of Portsmouth, Virginia, respectfully~petition your Honorable Body for <br />relief from the excessive and burdensome license tax which, is required to <br />be paid in_order to engage in a small retail~ocery business. <br /> At the present time we are forced to pay for seven sets of licenses <br />to-wit: Nerchants License from the State of Virginia: Tobacco License from <br />the State of Virgimia, Nerehants' License from the O~ty of portsmouth, Tobacco <br />License f~om the ~i~y of Portsmouth, Soft Drink License f=om the City of PO=ts- <br />mouth, Nilk License for the Gity of portsmouth, and ~eat License f=om the Oity <br />of Portsmouth.
