<br /> It is the desire of this body, that your Honorable Body get up a letter to
<br />the following parties, namely: .Claude A. Swanson, Secretary United States Navy; Hon.
<br />Flood Byrd, Senator from Virginia; Hon. Oolgate W. Darden, Congressman from Virginia, and Hon.
<br />Carter Glass, Senator from Virginia.
<br /> It is our desire that you take this action as an endorsement of a plan which
<br />we wish to take up in Washington endeavoring to get Oompensation for one of our members that
<br />was hurt at the Navy Yard several years ago, and the proper compensation was never paid.
<br /> This party I have re~erence to is Brother Charles Quillin, now deceased, ac6~ount
<br />o~ this same accident.
<br /> I understand that this ease has been clearly explained to Mr. Brinson, the 0curt-
<br />oil Olerke to whom this letter is addressed, and Ibelieve he can give a good explanation cf
<br />the whole affair.
<br /> we are endeavoring to get the support of the several Oivic Bodies of POrtsmouth
<br />including the Ohamber of Oommerce and the Retail Merchants ASsociation, ~ogether with the Cen-
<br />tral Labor Union, and Metal Trades Department of the American Federation of Labor. All these
<br />bodies have offered their support and some have already produced letters.
<br />These letters we desire to be sent to the writer of this letter, who in turn
<br />will turn them over to the proper committees tha~ are going to W~shington to fight the case.

<br />one of their Free Engertainments and advertised and sold the Maxey Prodoots from the s~age,
<br />%his was done te introduce the Maxey Line in Portsmouth and the Maxey Products were then
<br />placed in the Local Drag Stores_al this Oity, and were supplied by the Gilpen Wholesale Drug
<br />Oompany ef Norfolk, Va. and othe~ Drug Oompanies.
<br /> we wish at the reGuest of the many 'Local Drug Stores in Portsmouth that carry or
<br />sell the Maxey Remedies, and for the purpose of stimulating the sale of said Remedies'for the
<br />Local Dr~g Stores, we want tc conduct another Advertising and Sales Oampange in portsmouth,
<br />but the Present License that you now have on your books make it impossible for the Maxey Ned~
<br />icine Company to pay.
<br /> The owner and manager of the Maxey Free Show carries letters of recommendation f~om
<br />most every City it has visited from the officials, such letters saying that the show was olean
<br />and good and free of any objectional features and it is the onl2 Medicine Shew that was gramt-
<br />ed a license on the Board Walk in Atlantic Oity and in Miami, Florida, and such letters from
<br />0ity Mayors, and 0ity Managers were shown to Mr. H.B. Anderson, Oity Manager of Porte, ouCh,Va.
<br /> The entertainment is free and no charge is made only on the sale of the Remedies,
<br />we also carry a refreshment stand sell candy, pop corn and drinks, this is no ~ a Oarnival or
<br />Circus, but a high class entertainment, that any Lady or child can see, and your officials
<br />will tell you that they had no compla~t when we were here twice before.
<br /> We dO.aSk that you consider, that we come here in the interest e£.the local drug
<br />stores that carry our products, and we are at a very heavy expenseto carry on this advertis-
<br />ing sale. A~d we do hope and ask that you mske a reasonable license that we car pay, for
